My boss is in the hospital after multiple bites over a few weeks. She has been on steriods & antibiotics. The building was treated but bites continued. Now she has blood clots. I had 2 bites initially they are healing then on Tuesday noticed this one but no allergic reaction like she has had. I refused to go to the doctor as mine seemed minor. No one knows what is biting us. I may need to get it checked out as the swelling is much worse this AM. Oddly, the swelling seems worse in the evening & improved during the day for the last couple of days. I have never known of any kind of bite doing that. The bite is right on my middle knuckle. Guess I should have it checked out huh? But I HATE being on steriods as I know that is what they will do. Steriods make me so very jittery I can hardly stand it. But I suppose if there is risk to my hand, worth it. We shall see.
Hmmm. If I may ask, what kind of work do you do?

Mental health therapist for preschoolers.

Well, Maybe it was a mistake but I opted not to go to the doctor & instead got Ruby's shock tower covers installed. Then Mike & I went & borrowed my dad's truck to bring some cabinets from Dad's house that had never been installed & put them in the garage. Then we went to Lowe's & got the first load of pegboard, put it in the garage & took the truck home. That is all stuff we have needed to get done for a long time but just could not find the time. I took some benedryl (sleepy now) and put some steriod cream on my hand. It hurts & feels kind of tight when I try to make a fist, but I really think the swelling is just a part of the healing process. They were supposed to remove the carpet from my & my bosses offices today.

Here are a couple of pics of Ruby's new bling. (yeah, Ruby needs a bath ) Check my garage build thread for pics of the garage stuff.

Hope your hand gets better fast. It sounds pretty painful. :( Keep taking the Benedryl until/or unless a doc says different. It will help I think. Blessings.

Judges...do we have a winner???

Ding, ding! I'd have to say close enough for the win! Banana is the magic word. It's a Banana Slug. Said to be the second largest slug species in the world. Slugs irritate me at home, but I saw this one at work, so it didn't bother me. A couple days ago I tossed it onto a little "island" in our parking lot to keep it from getting squished. I've kind of been watching for it, and today it came back. I was able to get the pictures I couldn't get the other day, then I tossed it back onto the island. I've read that there have been 23 species of slugs described on the Olympic Peninsula. Doesn't surprise me. I also read that they can reach up to 10 inches in length. I've seen some close, but I don't think they were quite that long. They can be dangerous if you step on them, worse than their namesake, because they are so slippery. If you grab one, as I have while weeding, good luck getting that mucous off! I've scrubbed with a hard bristled brush and hot soapy water to no avail. They mess up your windows, and if they get in the house, there's no difficulty seeing where they've been. And don't get me started on how fast a slug that size can chew all your flowers to the ground!

Hope he doesn't get to close to that penny, it wouldn't go well...
Bamboo? btw, what happens if the slug gets near the penny, other than no one wants to pick up the penny ever again?

I knew the answer to the slug quiz, but living in WA, I figured it was cheating if I answered. I've seen banana slugs at least 8-10 inches long... My sister is scared to death of them - even now, at 35 years old, she'll run away screaming. Kind of funny, actually.
I've heard if you plant lettuce in the flower beds, they'll eat the lettuce instead of the flowers. Haven't tried it yet, but, judging by how my Hostas look every year, I probably should...

Had a brutal end to the week - short staffed, but very busy. Managed to only stay 30 minutes late tonight. Sooooooo glad it's Friday.
See ya tomorrow, Gary!

Oddly enough, slug chemistry is somewhat like a battery. When it comes into contact with copper, it creates a galvanic reaction similar to what happens when a fork makes contact with a filling in your mouth. And in the same way just the thought of that makes us squirm, slugs don't like it either. That's why you'll find copper tape in the lawn and garden sections of stores around here. It's a passive deterrent employed to protect plants.

It's fun to put out a container with beer in it for them, too. They're attracted to it, but it kills them... OK, maybe not fun for them, but mildly amusing for us gardeners.

I know this may seem off the wall...but has anyone checked for bed bugs? Those creepy crawlers are making a come back and are very hard to get rid of. The symptoms just reminded me of some article I read about bed bugs. They can show up in luggage after a trip somewhere. The bugs are tenacious and can take several visits from the bug man to get rid of them. Hopefully, this is NOT the case! Get well soon. Maggie

These are mild cases. Some of the pics I looked at were horrendous!
