To the New GM: Build customer cars now at the promised price

PHP Code:
"Our agreement with the U.S. Treasury and the governments of Canada and Ontario will create a leaner, quicker more customer and completely product-focused company..." CEO Fritz Henderson said at a news conference in New York
June 3, 2009
GM CEO Fritz Henderson

Dear Mr. Henderson,
May I respectfully suggest that you begin the "New GM" by building the pre-ordered customer Camaros before any others? I understand that you are enjoying one yourself and I would like to join you. Oh, and may I also request that you ask GM dealers to refrain from any mark-ups beyond the origional agreed upon price?

Sincerely,

Stevo
A pre-order Camaro customer

And why do you think dealers have markups if people like you are going to buy them?

Once again, GM cannot control dealerships selling prices. Whether or not you want to believe it, Market Value still exists in certain situations. Like ordering Lobster when going out to eat. Sometimes you'll pay $25, sometimes $35.

We- the people now own GM- and I don't care about current market price- I made a deal for a specific price months ago with hard cash- HONOR IT.

Sorry, but there's no way I'd pay over msrp....there's plenty of dealers NOT charging mark up!!:( I'm paying msrp and told the dealer I'd walk if he charged me anything over......

Agree with building preorders first but GM (legitimately) has no control over the price the car is sold for.

Stevo, you don't understand the allocation Laws. Once GM gets the allocation approval from the federal Gov, they can no longer affect how cars get delivered to dealers. It is federal Law. And further more GM has zero control over what a dealer charges you for said car.

The dealers were supposed to be honest with you about the allocation process and how that a preorder did not mean first in line. It meant that you would get your car based on GM's ability to produce it without any constraints, aligned with the dealers priority in the national allocation, and the factories schedule.

Everyone agreed to the current process. It fell on the dealers to accurately inform you the consumer how this was going to work. They may say they didn't understand it either. IMO that is their fault not GM's. GM did not lie to the consumer. Many GM insiders warned us that this Pre order thing was going to be bumpy and even inconsistent depending on your order and your dealer's allocation.

I don't like the end result either but it's time to move on.

It can't be changed at this point. By all means send a letter to the CEO explaining your dissatisfaction with the process. Maybe next time they will get it right.

FWIW.

A letter from Mr. Henderson asking those dealers with a GM dealership to honor their deals should be done- for the reputation of this company. I plead ignorance to the allocation "laws" but I suspect that in a bankruptcy "sold orders" should have a new priority and the bankruptcy judge may have some say so over this if Mr. Henderson were to ask for it.

I think you're missing the point. GM cannot legally govern the price that dealers charge. That's why it's MSRP: Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. A company can suggest the price to charge all it wants, it's up to the dealer to make a decision about it.

You're right, the dealer should honor whatever deal they offered in the first place, but without that in writing and signed by both parties, the dealer can do whatever he or she wants in the long run.

That is a fair point. I don't pretend to know the business ins and outs of selling cars from GM's perspective. But, It seems to me if they have a sold order it may be more equitable to get non sold cars to the lot. Assuming sold pre orders don't cancel... But even then the canceled car will sell at over MSRP. There is no incentive for the dealer to be above board. Even if the CEO asks the judge for it.

I don't think this is how GM saw this playing out... It's a shame either way.
