Cylinder deactivation
Sombody please clairifiy when it comes on and goes off, i read that it was like the old Eldorados 4 to 8, that was when you were on the highway you went to 4 makes sense. But one of the members posted an actual gm text that says its on around town and the opposite on highway which makes no sense, confused^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

when you are cruising with a light load on the motor, it will go into 4 cyl mode.

I can hear it in the exaust....sounds like a little popping 1 or 2 times when activating and deactivating...........as above...running 30 or 40 or so around town and lite load on engine....I like to have my automatic in manual shift maybe 3rd or 4th at these speeds......no cyclinder deactivations seem to take place and the throttle power +++ is ready at the touch of the peddle............

There is amember on this board who keeps posting it backwards and promises everyone else has it wrong. The car runs in 4 cyl mode at cruise and light throttle.

I have put 1000 miles on my SS with the L99 and the AFM comes on at low speeds and high speeds. It is less noticeable at highway speeds. It is more noticeable at lower speeds.I was driving last night in town around 35 mph and AFM was coming on.I actual played with it at that speed getting it to come on and go off.I was alittle surprised how much hesitation it had when you would get on the gas at that speed. The bottom line is if you want to avoid this stupid crap, just keep it in Sport mode and shift it your self.

AFM/DOD is a very cool feature but it is also very particular as to where it is activated.
The system is literal controlling via solenoids the passage of oil to the lifters, hence not allowing certain valves to open at certain times. The criteria is very specific. This is why it will never be optioned on a manual car. I don't have the exact data off hand but the car needs to be at a very light throttle for x amount of time. The engine has to be in closed loop mode and be at a certain temperature. It has to be between a very particular rpm range. I believe 90mph is the cut off where it stops working. When i get a chance I'll pull out the exact parameters and post them up for you guys. Thanks Mike Haddad |
