Steering Wheel Squeaking
Hey guys im having a problem I want to fix and im hoping you guys can help me get to the bottom of whats going on. I have a 2011 camaro and this is the first problem ive had with it.
What happens is that when I turn the steering wheel it squeaks pretty badly. It really sounds like a squeaking/ grinding sound. When it started, it was very faint but now its become louder and happens more frequently. Ive checked my power steering fluid level and its fine. Another thing that puzzles me about it is that it seems to go away in cold weather. I dont know if thats relevant but its just an observation. Im also out of warranty so I think im going to try to get to the bottom of it myself or at least do as much as I can. Thanks in advance guys! |

it is a common gm problem I have a 2010 chevy truck that does it and it drives me crazy too. It is the plastic on the wheel rubbing the plastic on the column

I have that issue with my 2008 Saturn Vue, from my research it is caused by a rubber bushing that needs silicone lubricated occasionally. I haven't done it because it comes and goes. But one day I will get around to it.

I was trying to find the post again on the Saturn forum but I think they must delete old threads after a while. If I recall correctly its somewhere around where the column goes through the firewall. The sound travels up the column and the steering wheel acts like a speaker so it sounds like the squeek is right there. But I cannot remember for sure. And it may not be the same problem on the Camaro.

Could it be the belt slipping? For some odd reason, the steering wheel only squeaks when its warm or hot out. The last few days that it has been cold, the squeaking stops. So I thought maybe the belt became slightly more loss on warm days and slipped a little and contracted on cold days thus not letting it squeak.
Also, how hard is it to flush the power steering fluid so that I can at least do that and see if it helps |

Mine started this a few weeks ago and got worse as time went on. Last week I changed the fluid in the power steering, the old had turned brown and I assume didn't work anymore. Afterwards the sound went away over the next day, but now it's come back. I'm scratching my head and it looks like a trip to dealer.

I think im going to have to change out the fluid as well to see what happens. At this point, I think it might be the pump but I dont know what to do

Took mine into dealer this morning, turns out the rack and pinion needs to be replaced. They have it on order so it'll be next week before its fixed. I sure do hope that the new one doesn't start the same thing.

Could you post to see if that takes care of it? Does yours squeak all the time or only sometimes?
