5w 30 SL instead of 5W 30 SM
I found out that the previous owner took the camaro for a maintenance schedule after 1 year, (2.500 miles), the dealer invoice shows that they used 5w 30 SL oil, the manual says to use 5w 30SM, should I sue the dealer? Am I at risk? Its 4k miles right now!

Sue? Sounds a little drastic. Not sure of the exact difference between the two (they have different additives, I believe), but if you aren't having any issues and it still bothers you, I would just replace the SL with the SM.

Your car is fine and hasn't suffered any harm.. From what I was able to find, the main differences between SM and SL oils are the additives that are in them. SM oils have a better wear rating than the SL oils. Now, you said your car has 4,000 miles.. The first oil change was made at 2,500 miles? The good thing is that you had the correct oil during the most important period of the engine's life which I would say is in the first 500-1000 miles.
You have 1500 miles on this oil.. Even if you had the cheapest oil out there, I would bet that the oil that is in there has done a good job in lubricating everything as it should. Now that you know it doesn't have the oil that was recommended by GM, change it. All I am trying to say is that you don't have a thing to worry about. Get an oil change with Mobile 1 as recommended by GM and call it a day. |

Come on Sue? Have you ever heard of buyer beware? $4k with the cheapest oil probably wouldn't hurt the engine unless YOU abused it by flooring the throttle every where you went. If you did then it would have been your fault for over revving the engine. Like the previous poster said, almost half your mileage was with what came from the factory. You are good to go. Don't worry, besides if you sue you would loose in my opinion.

You'll be fine. What I don't understand is your asking if you should sue the dealer for something they did to the car before you even owned it. That's worse than the sue happy USA.
