Dealer putting 87 in initially is good?
Hey all,
A fellow member mentioned that the dealer puts 87 in your Camaro first and its good initially but after it will hurt it. Can anyone explain? |

lol let me help...
he said this: "...ONLY USE 91 OR 93 OCTANE FUEL. 93 if you can get it 91 if not. even though gm says you can put 87 in it they are wrong. it will kill your 6.2l The manual says you may hear a knocking sound. that knocking sound is your engine being destroyed. run 2 tanks of 93 in it then pull fuses 5 and 20 over night. your dealer put 87 octane in it. doing this alows the ECM to go back to the 93 octane tune so you have the most power. It will do it on its own but may take 6mo to do it..." |

You already have the answer. Don't use it, and if you do you need to do the fuse pull. Good luck to you.

most dealers put 87 in the car because they wont spend the money to put 93 in it. GM says in the manual that you can put 87 in it so the dealer will put 87 in it. Just assume you got 87 from the dealer. its not good not at all. what I meant was pulling the fuses allows the ecm to go back to the 93 tune. I never said 87 was good.

Is this only for the SS? Or should us V6 people do it also?

93 octane fuel has little, if any, performance advantage over 91 octane in a stock SS. 87 is completely safe to use, but your performance will be downgraded. If changing over from 87 to 91 or more, it will take some time for the computer to bring performance levels to maximum. A fuse pull *may* accelerate the process.

It's not something to freak out about...if there's 87 in it, pull the fuse and you're good to go. 87 is not going to hurt the engine.

well pull the fuses after you run a couple of tanks of 93 through it 1st. any thing less then 91 will just put it on the 87 tune again.
So with 10.7:1 compression how does the tune allow it to run safely? I know it reduces timing. Does it keep the ex valve open just a little bit when it ignites to bring the compression down so the 87 won't ignite from the compression?
