The smog pump probably comes on everytime you startup if it's like a vette. It's an electric airpump that is used for the emissions system. On many older cars they used to do it with a belt drive airpump. So if your not used to that it might sound out of place. And sports coupe it's louder cause of the general car profile of thin vs trucks etc.

In school I worked for a radiater company. One day the owner comes over and asks u two new guys to run over to Canadian tire to buy a can of steam. He hands us 10 bucks. Off we go. Imagine the laughter at the parts counter when two kids show up looking for a can of steam.
