Take a close look at some of the pics in this thread. You can see dye/paint on the leather. Do yourself a favor and take your time, be careful. Don't just slather it on and hope to be able to wipe off the excess.

Guys, what color would the original stitching be? Gray/silver?
I had to repair a small rip in the seat and the person who did the repair over sprayed some black dye on the stitching so I wanted to return it back to it's original color. Thanks |

That was a major concern of mine when I did this. However, after doing it there was a small amount of dye left over. I diluted some all purpose cleaner and it came right off and left the dye perfect. Went over the leather with some additional cleaner and conditioner and no complaints! Have gotten a lot of compliments on it already from people in my car! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I welcome arguments to my research, that these colouring techniques are not durable, although I acknowledge that these dyeing or painting techniques do work to a point.
I understand that polyester thread is coloured at the manufacturing process of the resin, and is relatively impervious to any dyeing or painting technique post-manufacturing. At best, dye or paint particles can be applied to the surface of the thread as a surface colour coating only. Adherance of the surface colour coating can be improved by oxidising the surface of the thread with bleach. Coverage of the thread with surface colour coating can be improved by using alcohol based media which disperses and dries quicker. Whether using water or alcohol based media there is no permanent bond or penetration of the thread other than subsequently applying high heat to effectively bond the pigment colour with the thread. In my caee, it's a bit more complicated, in wanting to convert my stitching from the factory red to a blue that compliments the blue ray metallic exterior. As I also eventually want to replace my Alcantara "faux suede" seat and dash inserts with real tanned leather, albeit higher maintenance it does mean that I can use real blue stitching at the time of replacement. I question why red is the factory standard on this interior trim package, as IMO it really does not compliment colours such as blue ray metallic. I guess I could experiment with these dyeing or painting techniques, with the risk that the blue would fade to purple! Last edited by NZZL1; 04-19-2014 at 02:18 AM. |

I haven't tried on the Zl1 red stitching, I changed my SS white to red, but I imagine it wouldnt work well since the red is darker and you are trying to change it to a lighter color.
