HotRod: Brake Testing the Z/28!
Brake Testing The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28
0–100–0 MPH By Brandan Gillogly, Photography by Brandan Gillogly Hot Rod Magazine, July 02, 2014 On the turns of a road course, the ’14 Chevy Camaro Z/28’s Pirellis grab like Artie Ziff, but what if you’re not a road racer? How do you impress your buddies with a car that’s got killer grip, 15.5-inch (front) and 15.1-inch (rear) carbon-ceramic brakes, and 505 hp? Simple, use the supercar test made famous by the 427-powered Shelby Cobra: 0–100–0 mph. When we asked Chevrolet what the Z/28 would do in a test like that, the company confessed it didn’t know. So when a pre-production car was sent to the West Coast, we teamed up with our brothers at Motor Trend to see firsthand what Chevy’s supercar killer could do. Motor Trend’s Carlos Lago and Scott Mortara took turns launching the car from the big end of California Speedway’s unprepped dragstrip. The surface was smooth asphalt, so both drivers had to launch carefully to avoid wheelspin. With a GPS-based VBOX data logger installed in the cabin of the Z/28, they logged four 0–60–0-mph runs, with an average time of 7.08 seconds and an average distance of 327.86 feet. Road & Track tested a field of supercars back in 2003 that included a Porsche 911 Turbo, a Viper SRT-10, a Lamborghini Murcielago, and a Saleen S7. The Turbo 911 took the crown then, but none of those cars posted a better 0–100–0 time or distance than the ’14 Z/28 Camaro. When the guys made three 0–100-0–mph runs, they saw an average time of 13.34 seconds and an average distance of 1,087 feet. To put that into perspective, the Z/28 could back up to the stern edge of a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier’s flight deck, accelerate to 100 mph, and stop just in time to keep from taking a salty bath. The ken miles AC cobra run was 13 seconds with a probable fudge factor since it was a handheld stopwatch.

Awesome numbers. I was wondering what the Z/28 was capable of doing this test in!

Why would they compare the braking to cars way back in 2003? They should have used the newer z06 centennial and 911 as a benchmark.

Chevy needs to make a commercial of that feat on an aircraft carrier!

Probably because that was the best results ever posted, by them, in the test before the Z/28.
