New tires mounted and wheels scratched.

Can someone help explain how this happens? This is my third time having wheels scratched during tire mount and the manages always say that it can't happen. Looks like they hit it with something and also looks like something was rubbing against the wheel when it was being balanced or rotated on mount since there are light abrasions all the way around the wheel.

Manager wants me to drop the cars off so they can have all four wheels repaired.

That really sucks !! I hope you can rectify the problem. I plan on putting different tires on my Z as soon as it comes in . I'll have to watch them closely.

certain places have special mounting machines that are made to protection painted, custom type wheels. Most of the time they have the new guy mounting wheels...if they fix them that's ok, but I used to fix wheels and all they do is sand them down and paint them. It will never be completely ok again. Good luck!

I went OEM tires because of the lip and price for the most part.

My only concern from previous experience is they seem to paint over existing or don't do a great job in matching OEM paint/color. On my last two weeks they were aftermarket and when they did corrections it was so bad that the tire shop ended up replacing the wheel completely.

It's probably from the bar that is used to pry up the lip of the old tires to remove them.

That's not true regarding the repairing! I damaged two wheels against a curb last year and they were gouged and scratched. Came back better than the factory as they now had paint on them! Better than OK it was great. I have never had a problem with America's tire mounting my tires. They use the aforementioned machines.

Wow! Good luck with that. I have had one wheel damaged at my first oil change by one dealership. I had all four damaged at another dealership when they did an alignment. They chipped the paint on one and it was repainted twice. Now another has chipped at the point of where they attached the alignment equipment. I just told them to replace the wheels with new ones under warranty. It is very difficult to match the factory paint on those wheels. You definitely need to walk around the car before and after any time you have work done. The paint is really soft on these wheels.

Lucky for you there that it was at the dealer and they were able to replace them under warranty. With the tire shops they want to re paint. I guess I am lucky it was all 4 wheels scratched so they will have to paint all of them. My only concern is quality of the paint and workmanship compared to OEM. On my past two wheels which were aftermarket. After the repair it was never the same again. The paint was bubbled and had ripples. Also, it seemed they just paint over existing which filled up the lettering distorting them. They ended up replacing my wheel after they saw those issues.

Hopefully that will not happen as I don't want to have to argue again to have them replace the wheels although that would be a better option for me.

Discount scratched the first two sets on my SS so I decided this time I would go to Goodyear and give them a shot. Guess it was no different. I should have just let classic handle it while it was there for the rear end.

Same thing happened to me at a local dealership. They offered to have their "wheel guy" "do his best to repair". I never took them up on that offer. It'd be pretty inconvenient to leave my car to sit at the dealer for 2 or three days while their "wheel guy" tries to repair my wheels each time I get tires mounted.

that's my issue now with goodyear. They want me to drop my car off for two days so they can have the wheels repaired. I barely trust them with my wheels, not sure I'm comfortable leaving my car there now after what the wheel techs did.

Not sure what option I have aside from putting it on jacks and deliver them the wheels.

I've had tires replaced on my Forgelines several times due to nails and each time Discount says they won't damage my wheels because they have this "special machine" that's not "supposed" to hurt the wheels. They put a nylon sleeve over the tool that slips the tire off the rim, and the base of the machine has black rubber. I still have scratches and marks on the face of the wheels and on the chrome lips. I think the problem is they don't clean the machine well enough and dirt gets built up on the rubber platform and the nylon sleeve gets nicked and dirty which marks the wheel face and scratches the chrome lip. Looks to me like their machine isn't so "special" after all.

That sucks man.... I was pretty open with the service manager about my previous experience and he assured me it wouldn't be an issue and won't happen.

I'll post pictures of the repair when it gets done next week. Still debating on what to do about leaving my car there.
