First off, in '72 there were little if any car shows. They were just getting started except for indoor rod & custom
shows: IE Oakland Roadster Show, Hartford Armory, etc. In the late 60's, early 70's 1955-57 Chevys
were not even allowed in let alone any new cars.

Same with new cars. Even more so. I've got old stuff I've built and old stuff I bought, and new stuff, and I guarantee you that regardless whether you buy it or build it, the old car is going to take a LOT more effort to maintain that fresh look. A lot more.

You usually get more attention in the older stuff because you hardly ever see the cars on the road anymore.

Three major things, regardless of how old the car...cleanliness, fit and finish. If you falter on any of these, you shouldn't win any trophy.

Too many judges look at a 1970 car as a home-built machine from the ground up. Newer cars are built at the factory and customized at home.

Car show....
Car builder show....
Contestant beware.

Just a question...How is an older car harder to maintain? I can see and get to just about everything on my 67 GTO...once she is clean she is parked....awaiting her debut at the next show or cruise.

The Camaro drove me to work today and took the hits from numerous bugs into the radiator and grille area that I can't really get to.

Most of the GTO parts are original, but what aren't came from any one of 6 different OE production houses that all I need to do is write a check and they deliver...just like the Camaro.

Once you get an old car clean and it is relegated to show duty...it's a cinch to keep clean...you try and put a daily driver into a show with a desire to win and you have a real job on your hands, not to mention the care you take on a day to day basis.

I'm afraid you are misplacing your "old cars are harder to maintain" idea. With the hidden/hard to access engine, plastics, thin paint, cheap vinyl/leather...new cars are just as hard.

Just go to shows that have your class in it. Most of the shows I go to have a class for our cars and most of the people there are very respectful. I find it very funny when some one is not. One guy had a 69 camaro ss with a ls3 and all new suspension, digital read outs in the dash etc... who said new cars don't belong in a show?(even though there was a class for them) His was newer then mine just had a 69 body. Very few people do there own work anymore. Most of the older muscle cars I see are shop built and have new modern engines , ecu, brakes etc... very nice cars but those cars are just as new. the old school guys who keep them original and do the work themselves have always have been very respectful around my area. I also agree keeping out specific cars in a show for charity only hurts the charity.

I've been in that boat. But, I temper it with the understanding that some (I understand not all) have put alot of time and effort not only fixing it up, but carrying it through time until now without a major accident or tragedy that would make the car useless in a show.

I have both an old car and my 2010 Camaro SS. Frankly, I want people to notice my Cutlass more because of the 22 years of pain, love and hardwork I've put into it keeping clean and free from defilement.

Granted...does that make it fair at a show...no. But, I get it.

Like you said and others are saying, just dont spend your cash there next time. Nothing votes like the dollar!

most of the shows i go to are participant judged and there are usually classes for newer cars. i dont go to shows expecting to win something, i go to hang out with the people in my car club and have a nice day. if i win something that is a bonus.

It's obvious you have never owned an "antique car". Your '67 GTO is an old car, not always considered an antique. You need upholstery for your Camaro- easy, need a starter, easy, try that for a '56 DeSoto, "56 Packard, etc.. not so easy. Generalizations are so east to spew out. Oh, and when the rust starts popping out on your GTO or the cars I've mentioned, then what ? I haven't seen rust popping out on one of these new 5th gen Camaros yet.

Camaros and Mustangs are not even muscle cars. They are pony cars. Big difference. But I agree with some people Sorry, I love Camaros but unless there are seriously different than stock, they or no other stock vehicle should be in a car show.

I have only taken my old Mustang to one car show. I find it "silly" that I have to pay money for other people to come and look at my car.

I'll stick to the local car cruise-in's on Saturday night.

When parts fail on my old stuff I fix them or rebuild them, not just throw chinese reproductions on in their place. And as mentioned above, not every collectible car owner is lucky enough to have 6 reproduction parts houses eager to build you a new car from the ground up, many require great machinists and metal men to make replacement parts that haven't been available in 50 years.

Does a new car have manually adjusted brakes and clutch, a dozen or so zerk fittings, wheel bearings that really ought to be cleaned, repacked and adjusted every year or 2, carb (or carbs) that needs constant tinkering to keep healthy, and points adjusting and filing. If you go back far enough generators and 6v systems require quite a bit more TLC than modern electrical systems, canister oil filters, oiling locations that need to be oiled daily. I'm leaving plenty out, but I hope you get the idea.

A new car by comparison needs a oil filter and a few quarts of oil every 5000 miles and watch for warning lights on the dash?

I'm not complaining, these are the reasons I love antique cars and tractors, but to suggest they're not more work than a modern vehicle is just ridiculous.

We all know that the most important thing at a car show is... the trophy girls.
