Hood Wrap Kit?
I'm looking for some recommendations for a matte black hood wrap kit for my car. I've done a bit of searching and haven't found anything decent as of yet. Also for those DYI'ers how hard was the install?

Did it mostly myself, you need help to first lay the film out over the hood after that it is just a matter of patience and you will get great results fo about $70

As a first timer or beginner, doing something as big as the hood without an extra hand is a NIGHTMARE. Having someone help you take the backing off and lay the film down initially makes it leaps and bounds easier though. Definitely use 3M 1080 Wrap film though, it's a lot easier to work with than some other films and can be quite forgiving. I've wrapped my hood as well as almost all my car (check my sig, the red is vinyl) in this stuff.

Does the vinyl allow you to peel it up if you don't quite align it correctly? I should have help peeling off the backing and placing it.

If you use 3M's 1080 film, it features an adhesive that's pressure-activated. It's a little forgiving on the initial lay, but if you press it down, it will stick, and you will stretch it pulling it back up (which can easily be undone with a heat gun). Having a heat gun on hand will help you immensely. Applying heat shrinks the film back to its original form, helping eliminate wrinkles and stretches.

I did mine myself. Mostly on my own the first time, I have done it twice now in total. Materials was 1080 Matte Black air release 3M vinyl from Vivid Vinyl from Amazon.com.
First time was passable with one trouble area that bugged me, so I did it over and now I am very happy with it. Go slow, use a heat gun or hair dryer sparingly to avoid overheating the vinyl. I used almost no heat the second time around. It is a big project to tackle alone and to learn on. First time took me 3.5 hours, second attempt took 1.5 with a buddy helping me control the film some with me working it down. Then I did a buddies 2012 SS in an hour with him assisting. Goes faster each time. In the first pic you can see how you need to have enough to overlap all sides. I used a 6'X5' wrap. Once you get it layed down, work the air slowly. I worked from the hood center point out both sides, did the center cutout last and then trimmed the rest when done. Having an extra hand to lay this down helps a lot. You want it tight like a sheet stretched across the hood and then work the air out slowly. Having someone hold the edge of the vinyl open for the air to escape makes for a very clean install. ![]()
