When you style to appease your customer base, you do not inspire sales.

I'm not sure who they're trying to interest...it appears they're trying to convince everyone and ended up with a watered down design. IMO

The new Mustang will sell. The price of a charity auction may not be a true indicator.

A Camry wouldn't bring much at auction either and it is (or close to) the number one seller.

It is a risky design, but solid. There is the old example of the clinic I saw the result from. Dodge vs. Chevy pickup. The Dodge was way high in the "gotta have" and also way high in the "can't stand it". The Chevy was had far fewer loves, but also far few hates in comparison. And we know which on of the two has continued to sell better over the years.

They may simply be trying to be less polarizing. And it may work.............................or not.

That's understood. However a Camry is a utility, a sports car is not. Its an emotional purchase. If we take the sales price out of it just the lack of excitement and emotion was very very evident at this event. To the point of the live feed cutting away to another shot.

That's the question. Are they sacrificing a car that will be more emotionally satisfying to a smaller audience in order to be more mainstream and get a higher volume?

I think Mazda left Flat Rock so there may simply be more pressure for volume.

In the end is it controversial styling that excites some vs mainstream styling that attracts more?

And I have several.

If we want to believe Camaro and Mustang are in a "niche" market, that's ok to make tie died collarless button down shirts.

But the more you make, the less you spend on parts. The less you spend on parts, assuming you can hold price, the more profit you make.

They may give up a bit in one segment to get even more volume in another.

As I've preached for a while now, having a great coupe makes for a great Camaro. It doesn't need to have a cartoon figure and gun slit windows to be a great Camaro.

And besides......................who is thinking they did anything bad to the Mustang for 2015. They weren't exactly starting with an eye popper to start with. What they did was really just smooth out an already bland design.
