2011 Ford GT500 bests 2010 V.I.R. lap time by 9 seconds
"To give a little context to the time… when referencing the best lap times ever recorded on FastestLaps.com, the 2011 Shelby GT500 is in some fairly elite company, and would place directly between the 10th ranked Chevrolet Corvette Z06 with 2:58.2 and the Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport C6 at 2:58.8 seconds. No offense to Gene Martindale, Ford’s vehicle dynamics engineer, but looking at the video it looks as if there might be a little more time to be shaved even still. Regardless, with the time recorded the 2011 shelby GT500 Mustang beats some fairly elite company with far larger pricetags, such as the Audi R8 V10 5.2 FSI, the Ford GT supercar, Dodge Viper SRT-10 and the Porsche 997 GT3 – to name a few."

Dan, thanks for the chart and link. I wish they would record the driver's name. I like to see runs by the same driver in the cars being compared. The driver is generally the biggest variable followed by temperature and the condition of the track. Running on a virgin track, rain washing out the rubber that seasons the track, makes a huge difference. On a track like VIR a virgin track vs a seasoned track could easily be a couple of seconds or more. There is no doubt that the 11 GT500 is a very fast car. Thanks again for the information.

Another example is I make 536rwhp, car raceweight just under 4k, has a mph of 125 w/ a dead hook. It takes about 10rwhp to get 1mph in the 1/4. So do the math, 125mph-2= 123mph. Thats 20rwhp he has less than me, if the weight is close and i beleive it is. That puts him at 516rwhp all things being equal. Regardless, I see no way a bonestock GT-500 ran that time mph wise. Again unless the GT500 he has put down 500rwhp. Homey may have had a pulley and a tune, or at the very least an really good tune in addition to the slicks. I ran a good freind w/ a GT-500 w/ my Vette when we were both stock and he just had drag radials, He ran an 11.9@118 and I ran 11.8@118. We ran all day and that was the best pass for both of us and we had Mineshaft air.

10.8 @ 126 mph Stock, it's really amazing how a set of wheels and slicks can gain you 10-mph in the 1/4. I stand by my statement when I raced a intake and exhaust only GT500 in the 1/8th he barely managed 8:60s @ 89 mph. He knows how to drive as well. My near stock SS has run a better e/t and nearly the same mph hopping through 1st gear, his was a 08/09 model though.

That is exactly why I bought it, it can do so many things well like tear up Porches on the road course, beat up on old muscle at the strip, and is good for 800hp before you have to look into supporting mods and all for $49k msrp. No other new car can do so much for so little.

Mine made 521whp stock during a dyno day right after another 2011 GT500 made 522whp and a 2011 GT that made 365whp. The 2011 GT500 is a completely different car then the previous years. Aside from the normal things you hear about it, it has new cams which people are saying are the Ford GT cams which makes sense since its now making peak power at redline. It has dual knock sensors so the computer can adjust the timing accordingly and get the maximum power allowed from the fuel you put in the tank. 40% larger heat exchanger, 3.73's on the PP model like the poster, factory fuel "boost a pump" for steady flow of fuel, and with a race weight of 3,660lbs. There is even more things that can contribute to the 2011's ET improvement. Like I said before these are similar mph's to what MM&FF get's when they test GT500's at the strip. Having driven and love both. I think as far as the Camaro goes, it's got the Mustang beat as far as style. Power could go either way, and honestly the opinion will vary depending on who you ask. Even the "experts" will say that one is better than the other in some regard. Just my opinion, I think it all boils down to what you want to drive and how you wanna drive it..! Happy hunting..

My wife and I own a Mustang and a Camaro. Before I bought my Camaro, I test drove both cars and abused them. I wrote a pretty long comparison a while back. Here is the short. You get more options for the same dollars on the Mustang. On the street straighline performance and the stock GT felt a tick quicker but honestly with the way the Camaro hooked up with it's meatier tires I think any race between the two would be a drivers race and not the car. What may seem boring to your buddy is that the Camaro is very easy to launch hard and keep controlled whereas the Stang tends to need to be tippytoed a little out of the hole (on regular street roads). I personally liked the seats and interior in the Camaro and the way you sit down in the Camaro more. The exhaust on the GT was far more impressive. GM should be ashamed of the stock exhaust on the Camaro as it has no muscle car tone at all and they bragged about how much effort they put into the tone of the exhaust, apparently they needed a little more time around the old muscle cars again. Exterior styling and the Camaro is a clear winner. Handling and I thought that I could push the Camaro harder and faster though some pretty tough twisties on not so great road surfaces. Again this is partially due to the width of the tires and the compounds. Ride quality, I liked the Camaro more. Find a local dealer that will let you really test drive the bejesus out of both and then pick the one you like best. Although they are similar, they have different feels behind the wheel.
