I've got an auto and allow it to coast in gear as often as traffic permits. The fuel cuts out on deceleration so letting it use friction and compression to slow the car uses less fuel than running hard in traffic and stabbing the brakes from a higher speed. So yeah, combined with not tromping the pedal all the time I routinely get better gas mileage by using this method.

No help from me, all I can say is I doubt there is much you can do, or Chevy would have done it.

Well, there is the theoretical MPG gainers: Assuming you keep your foot out of it and drive no differently, minor intake and exhaust mods should help. A CAI and ported throttle body should help. I guess exhaust mods should, but in my experience they bring it down. Maybe because of the "foot factor," maybe because they throw off the tune too much. Headers, gears and dynotune on my LS1 crushed my mpg 10%
The only REAL, guaranteed way to increase MPG is to reduce weight and engine drag. An underdrive pulley and electric water pump WILL increase fuel economy. They come with sacrifices, however, and if you have a 2013+ model year you already have an electric water pump. A/C delete would do a huge favor to MPG. Lightening the load helps as well. Lightweight wheels and tires, especially SMALLER DIAMETER wheels and tires, will help the most. Not to mention you'll pick up a lot of speed due to less rotational mass. Lightweight, forged 18" wheels would probably cut nearly half a second off your ET's and surely pick up mpg. That's what you're looking at. I have a CAI, Solo cats, lighter wheels and tires and a Bo White ported throttle body. Honestly, this is as efficient as I'll probably ever get since it lightens the load and still maintains the integrity of the tune. Anything more would likely throw it off too much. The underdrive pulley would probably do the most benefit aside from stripping the car of seats and all sound deadening, but both are impractical IMO for a daily driver.

I didnt know people bought sport cars for mileage? Like buying a truck and wanting good gas mileage.

Yea...sports cars need to be practical. No one buys a Camaro to get 50 mpg. But when you start falling into the teens, it becomes a real deal breaker. These are $30,000 cars. They are designed for the middle class individual. If they don't get passable mileage, it becomes completely impractical. A simple 2mpg increase equates to 10% better fuel economy, which equates to $6/week, which equates to $312 annually. That's a car insurance payment in some states.

There are some good tips in this thread. No such thing as a stupid question. Like others have said, drive it easy, keep your car well tuned and make sure your air filter is clean. One other thing that can affect fuel mileage is tire pressure. Make sure to check it frequently. On the highway, if you can force yourself to stay in the slow lane and drive 60mph, that will help greatly.

Other than the weight factor, how would an A/C delete help? As long as the A/C is off, it shouldn't have any noticeable impact on MPG or HP. If the clutch isn't engaged, it's basically just another idler pulley.

There's truly not really anything you can do that would save you enough money on gas for you to get a return.
If you spend 1k bucks chasing a 1-2mph improvement, it would take you years to make that money back in saved gas. Your best bet is to try changing your driving style. That said, I did long tubes, a tune, CAI and I average about 19mpg, I can get just over 24 on the highway. From what I can tell I noticed no real improvement or loss of MPGs after the mods.

Mod because you like to, you will possibly never see a return doing it to save gas. Normally if you need 30 mpg you don't buy a 25 mpg car and throw money at it to get better mileage. If you like the car be happy with the mileage. Babying a Camaro SS around trying to get good mileage doesn't sound like a lot of fun. |
