It is a solid glob of oil sludge. I could send it to you for a taste test, but only if you promise to video it and post it here.

I do autocross and HPDE, thats when the catch can will really come in handy. The motor spinning 5-6k rpm for periods of time is when you really start seeing lots of blow by. Sure it catches some during normal operation, but it's not going to cause issues, especially in a non-direct injection motor.

I was going to say the same thing. Sure is an unclear picture. But the blob has what looks like folds and crumples that resemble that of a piece of absorbent material like a paper towel or thin rag.

Maybe along with some condensed moisture, it's just a bunch of gunk turned into an oily ice cube, no paper towel.

If it's a giant ball of tar, I'd be fearful of of a lack of maintenance, or strange things being infused with the car's gas and/or oil! My car's intake, even without a catch can, looks pretty clean.

+1 I have a catch can too and I'm happy I have it, but I'm with this guy that really looks like a balled up paper towel.

take a sample of your used oil and let it sit for 3 years and see what it looks like.

ever buy a car that hasn't run for a long time, go to drain the oil and nothing comes out? sludged up. it happens

One works and one works at taking your money. You decide which.

I personally would throw CAI systems into that mix. Look at this spread sheet from an independent tester (Janity Racing I think):

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?...=1&output=html

I think these are a nice addition to mods like a cam and heads, but pretty damn expensive for what you get in gains. Yes they bolt on so anyone can do it, and you protect your warranty I believe, but they at best offer minor gains with equivalent drivability. Heck, how would you feel if you spent $300 on the Roto Fab and lost about 1 HP on avg. At least it fit nice. This is the same thing we saw dynoing K & N stuff back in the day. Just my opinion.

PS: And I fully expect to get ripped about this. But think about a CAI for $300 or so and a catch can for $200 or so...$500. Thats not chump change and you may have accomplished very little.

for about the same price as those three you can install headers and some trailing arms (maybe drag radials) and actually cut your ET, but I understand some folks are worried about warranty. I left mine stock for most of my warranty period.

We will stay stock through the warranty, and really the daily driver period as well. The point I was trying to make is that you never have been able to, and you never will be able to make a serious performance improvement to a car with simply bolt on things. The only $500ish improvement that makes a big difference is N20, and thats really only applicable to drag racing. I know head and cam packages are expensive ($3000 and up), void the warranty, require a tune and exhaust mods, but its the only way to get real power unless you want to go forced induction (turbos or supercharges.....big money as well). I just hate to see folks spend $700 or so the throttle controllers, CAI, and a catch can, and have done nothing to improve the output (ET's, lap times, HP) of there car. I guess today is my vent day, and I do agree its up to the owner, and what he wants may not be what i want, but facts are facts.

Boy, this catch can phobia thing just never ends no matter what.
When ever I empty mine from here on, I'll just smile and shake my head, knowing there's nothing more to be said.

I was planning on cleaning my CC this weekend, always surprised by how much it catches.

Would it cause issues even over a long period of time, not for me to say. But I do not want the crap it catches running back into the motor, I would rather spend 5 min and dump it out.

Those of you without a catch can probably have something similar to this in your intake tract right now.
So I kinda only quickly glanced at the picture yesterday, then when one of the members replied it looked like a towel or rag, I looked closer just now... it definitely IS a towel or rag. Pull that shit out of there, and if you posted this to be intentionally deceptive, cut it out!
