That is in fact a "depend on the dealer".

Rick, The big question for is whether you use RP or recommend using RP. I know as the official Chevrolet certified technician you are bound by your company but what does the Chevy technician/owner use in his cars?

I use GM manual trans fluid 88861800 in my personal Vette. I think the issue with grinding is due to the sintered bronze friction cones that are "grabby" and either on or off type of engagement (similar to manual clutch with similar friction material). The carbon blockers "slip" and have a softer engagement. I have heard through channels that 2011 Vette TR6060 have carbon blockers on all gears but my Tremec supplier told me it's only the 2nd gear blocker. Short of me getting my hands on one, I'll have to wait and see.

The tr6060 is also used in the 2010-2011 GT500 and are having issues with the 1 -2 shift when power-shifting/speed shifting at or near red line. It will grind and won't go into 2nd. But if you don't speed/power shift, you can take it to red line and granny shift 1-2 and it will go in.

Just ordered an RPM Level 6 transmission. Not that Chevrolet needs to do micropolishing and such, but maybe there's something to be learned. They're doing a billet output shaft and actually installing a rear bearing. My output shaft hasn't broken yet, but I'm right in the # range and didn't want to get stranded several states away having to take off work an extra week and end up ruining a vacation. Besides mine wouldn't be covered due to mods I'm sure - but have had the touchy shifting before the mods. Royal Purple did make it better and that's the fluid RPM says to use. Must be something behind it! It would be interesting if just adding the additional bearing could have solved most of the problems (even though heat treating was an issue). Good to see customer service taking interest in this thread.

1-2 Shifts Grinding

I'm having the same problem with my 2011 SS. Just picked the car up used a couple of weeks ago with less than 2,500 miles on it. Thought it was user error the first time but seems to only happen when the tranny is cold. I am double clutching to avoid the issue (which seems to work) and being particularly careful after the car has sat for any length of time. I'm really concerned about the longer term potential failure. With my luck that won't happen until after warranty. Does anyone know if GM has a tech notification out on this issue? Thanks

Damn... Sounds like someone passed their problem onto you. I still haven't heard of any TSBs for this problem, but you have the exact same symptoms I have. I'm waiting for a GM engineer to come to the dealership for a ride-along to see the exact problem. Maybe that'll get the ball rolling... Until then, I'm grinding the hell out of second. The more the the problem occurs, the faster 2nd gear will go out completely. Quick fix at the dealership then!

2nd gear grind with skip shift eliminator and Hurst short throw shifter

After all, it is designed to lock you out of 2nd.

btw ... mine does it too (#1691).

Makes me cringe

I have a skip shift eliminator and a hurst short throw shifter installed on my '10 2SS/RS LS3 and I still grind every once in a while when shifting into second under hard acceleration. This started happening around 1000 miles and has been doing it ever since. I have 5000 miles on the Maro now. I must say that it could be my fault because I let the clutch out a little bit too early when shifting very fast, but the skip shift eliminator did not change the grinding feeling whatsoever after I installed it. All it does is trick the solenoid, so it does not engage and allows you to shift into second. I don't think the skip shift eliminator changed anything for the second gear bind/grind problem that people are having. I also noticed that the hurst short throw amplifies vibrations from the tranny, espescially when the engine is cold and has not yet reached normal operating temperatures. It also makes it harder to shift into second from first, which takes some getting used to and is annoying. I noticed that all you have to do is slam it back into second harder when shifting from first to second and be sure to let your clutch out after you have done this and the second gear will not grind. It still binds though. I am going to try changing the tranny fluid with some high performance fluid. Hopefully it will help just a little. That Lucas oil transmission fix and atf fluid looks like good stuff. Here is a link. Hope this helps.
