What the hell was going on with Big Red going into the apexes? Smoke was rolling out of the back of the car every time? Either roasting rear brakes under trailbrake or sucking oil past the valve guides under decel?

Most likely from trailbraking... The Camaro he rented smoked the rear brakes.

This would be a fun competition. Big Red would have the advantage at high speeds. Red Devil would have the advantage at lower speeds. These two 1969 Camaros were built almost 30 years apart and for different purposes. Both are awesome machines!

We may get to see a rematch between Big Red (the '69 Camaro) and Little Red (Big Red's little brother...the 2014 Z28).
