I have a 45 mile round trip commute. I alternate between my 1998 Integra GSR and my Camaro. It is true about Honda and transmission. My Integra only has 112k miles and it is starting to slip and also has a grind on third gear.

I drive 5 miles a day both ways and my Camaro still manages to get dings/scratches, lower grill broken, and recently a giant tear in the front bumper. All from road debris. If I could drive something else during the week I would, but with the short distance it didn't make sense....It's starting to. Get the car with less miles and a clean service history.

Neither of those 2 cars will be as reliable as your Camaro. Nothing screams reliability about 10+ year old cars regardless of how well they may have been built (unless you dump a whole buncha money into them).

I'd DD the shit out of that V6.

Part of me believes the doors and the fact I have a camaro got me the interview, I was initially contacted threw my LinkedIn profile, which under hobbies I have a link to my car clubs website... the 2nd round interviews with the CIO was nothing but talk about cars we shared pics, he showed off his 4th Gen and his brothers 5th gen

22mpg highway? That can't be right, my SS with longtubes and a tune gets better than that. I would expect 28-30, I can easily get 24mpg highway in the SS.

My opinion would be to just drive the Camaro, it's going to be the most reliable and highway miles really aren't that bad on a car. Also, think about how much gas 6k buys you, you likely won't come ahead buying a car.

Use your Camaro and trade up when you are able to, much safer ride if you are involved in a serious wreck. ...just my $.02

I would say run your Camaro for a year and save up a sizable down payment on a small Honda or Toyota with great gas mileage. like one these (see attached link). Give the job a year to make sure it works out to make a commitment of buying a car. Then just go cheap reliable efficient, throw away car to rack miles up on.

or if you like to stick with chevy

if the civic has a chain (it was right around 2004 when they switched from belts to chains) I'd get it. people can talk shit on them all they want, but Honda sells 40k of them a month for a reason. cheap to own, low maintenance, and most of that is cheap. go compare the price of 4 tires on a civic to a camaro. they're bullet proof, and get great MPG's. and if you do the maintenance, you can put 350-400k miles on it.

only thing I'd throw in is you might want to extensively test drive one if you've never driven one much. bought my wife one years ago and thought it was one of the most uncomfortable cars I've ever driven. wasn't real crazy about how it rode either.

Cavaliers are great commuter cars, and nothing drives quite like a paid for ride. That'd be my vote. I'd try to get them down another $500 though, or find one from a private seller for less.

If you want to keep your Camaro nice, the daily grind to and from work isn't the way to do it.

oh, well if that's the case, then just drive it. If you're trading it in a less than year, might as well.

Is that really necessary? Besides, Civics are great cars - very dependable/economical, which is all OP is looking for. I had a '07 Civic coupe "commuter car" (bought it new) and racked up over 100K miles in a little over 4 years. 40 mpgs highway - never a problem.

OP: I think you should get that Honda for around $4,500.
