LS3 & L99 cam mpg

Comparing the cam specs between the two motors, I'm surprised the mpg numbers are so close. I've driven manual cars most of my life and never thought the fuel mpg wad that much different than an auto. I have seen though that sometimes a slightly larger cam will actually increase mpg for whatever reason. Do you think that's the case with the LS3?
