I'll try this one. And I truly don't mean to be condescending, so if I do; I apologize in advance.

'GT' stands for Grand Tourer. A 2 person, 2 wheel drive sports car with a huge dash of luxury. The 'R' is for racing. It started out as a gentleman's fun, with various rules. But it has morphed into a huge racing phenomenon. The FIA has GT1, GT2 and GT3 championships. There are many 24 hours races that are rated GT-R, including the 24 hours of Le Mans.

It is, primarily, a production car class. Although the bigger 24 hour races are certainly a testing ground for new technologies; Audi springs to mind. Often, production, factory, and limited or custom run side by side; not unlike in rallies.

It's not big in the US, because they don't go straight for very long, they turn right and left, and it's about endurance as much as power, and they are actually based on stock cars (for the most part). As Jalopnik mentioned; "Outside of the United States there are mystical racing events called
"Touring Car" where cars actually resembling family production vehicles
turn both left and right."

It's awesome to watch, and because it's still rather small, very accessible to most people (except the big races). It's not unusual to find spectators wandering the paddocks and for people to actually be able to talk to the drivers and chiefs. Especially the privateers. I have had excellent times shooting cars and drivers, frantic engines swaps at 2 am, teams weeping from DNFs and all sorts of madness at GT-R races.

And, there is a real chance that you can own the same cars that are on the track. So you can have that connection to the guy driving.
