Picked up mt SS Vert today with new top!

Unfortunately, it's a fail. See pictures. No wind noise, didn't check for water leaks, never got that far. Saw the "bump" at the dealership and thought it would maybe find it's seat and stretch out after leaving the top up for a while. Knowing about trim work from my early days at my dad's business, this piqued my interest tonight and I went out to for a second look. It's a bad top, either from improper installation onto that bow rail or out of the box. Here I go again.....

Hope it's not true for you Eli.......

Just adding as well, the hack job and tape TSB was performed as well. I am shooting for a new mechanism and top this time around - and also want to speak directly to the Field Rep to get this done right. More on this as next week unfolds....

Aw kranky, I have those bumps too. Now I'm going to check and see if that's what's causing it.

You have the famous "wave" in your top. All the verts are coming with the wave ! However the other issues are not right. These are the same issue I was having with my first 3 replacement tops. Once I got the total top replacement all those issues were gone except for the wave. SO far so good, over three months with no issues ! Hope things work out for you, Just work with your dealer and don't settle for the GM fixes if they are not right.

Not necessarily true. I checked out 9 verts at a local dealership and of the nine, 3 were perfect 4 had a slight wave and two were down right horrible.

OP,

If you release the pressure the bungee cord is applying to the flap on the top does the "wave" come out of the top?

My top was replaced a few weeks ago--luckily no wave. Still getting some rubmarks though that wash out.

I'll have to watch for that, I'm getting a new top within the next couple weeks. I currently have the "bumps" on both the passenger and driver sides...

If I pull the material downward that was torn from the bow retainer, while the top is fully closed, the "bump" will go away. The bump on mine is caused by the anchor material being torn at that spot in the pictures...

Interesting.

If I release the pressure on mine the wave will not go away. Factory top.

I don't have a tear in mine as you indicated. Both sides are like the drivers side.

I still firmly believe the top from the factory was defective which is further evidence that I need to make the road trip to Michigan and have Gerry sort this whole freaking mess out.

I agree with you. My take on this recent attempt to repair my automobile illustrate's GM's reluctance to get it right. They send a "retro-fitted" (quoted from the GM Cust. Assist. Center) top to be installed on the defective mechanism. As I warned the dealership, this is an epic fail. I must say though they really did try - would have been great had GM provided them with the right solution. Can't say I didn't warn them. I know auto-trim work and know what to look for. Then there's the new scratches on the back 1/4 and trunk lid as well - luckily they are not through the thin clear coat.

The new replacement (or as they say "retro-fitted") top is not made for the old (defective) mechanism.

The bow anchor material clearly does not fit the channels properly, the headliner does not fit the inside properly - sides exposed, etc. And the TSB "hack job with tape" on the defective mechanism is not a repair by any stretch - and they are reaching with that for sure. I will now be pushing for the entire top and associated mechanism to be replaced in whole. This is the very first step GM should be taking with these cars....knowing full well they screwed up. I want my car to correct, not pieced together to save corporate america's bottom line. Sick of this BS. Not the dealer's fault, they've been great....it's the morons at GM that just don't get it until it results in a replacement vehicle. Something I do not want, but none-the-less must keep in mind to protect my "bottom line".

New top ordered 5/21. Another try.... This time a sub out to a pro shop that does a lot of custom work and exotics. Wait and see I guess. Pics to follow when the top is in and the job is done. Crossing my legs and fingers again!
