HEADERS, HI-FLOW CATS A GOOD IDEA?

Considering a set of smog-legal Edelbrock shorties and a set of Hi-flow cats to back up my SLP Loudmouth II.

Now I've heard rumors that the SLP only sounds good behind a stock setup, and that headers etc could, in short, make my car sound like crap. I want the horsepower, and the more aggressive sound, but not at the expense of my current exhaust. I'm looking to upgrade it, not replace it. Anyone ever come across this setup so I can know if it's going to help/hurt the sound of the car???

I can't answer as far as the set-up you're considering.

But regarding others opinions of what the SLP set-up sounds like with headers, etc., DO NOT go by what others say, but by what YOU like.

I have the SLP L/T's, Y-Pipe, High flow cats, and Loudmouth, and have received nothing but positive responses from those who have heard it in person.

There are a few sites that offer you the option of hearing them, but I'd suggest researching people in your area and making arrangements to hear the set up in person.

I've been asked on numerous occassions to meet people in my area, and many choose the same set up after hearing it in person.

Remember, its the sound YOU prefer. NOT what others may think.

as far as HP goes, mids wont net you much in that department. The best headers and y-pipe are american racing headers, which cost as much as SLP's. Keep in mind that all long tube headers net a hp gain thats in the same ball park, and unless your going for 500 N/A horses you may not see a difference between the best brands (ARH, then QTP and KOOKS, followed by SLP) For me it boiled down to which of these I could get for cheapest. I got the full SLP header/ypipe/cats/installation kit for 950.00 on ls1tech.com.

Ive got mixed feelings about the setup. headers are perfect, but the loudmouth makes me wish Id have just got the GMMG

True that, it's not that I'm too worried about what other people say about my ride, I love my car It's just that I've heard a few people say that the sound of LM II is only degraded by upgrading (if that makes any sense...) You're right tho, if only I could find someone nearby with a similar setup, that would be ideal!

Gotcha. 950 doesn't sound too bad, I'm looking at a set of Edelbrock shorties, and some Hi-flow cats for 500. I already Have SLP LM II on the car... I'm a member of LS1tech also, I'll have a look.

BTW- what's GMMG?

GMMG catback exhaust is hands down the best sounding exhaust...

go to ls1sounds.com its pretty much a site full of exhausts clips for 4th gen camaros and 5th gen vettes. Listen and judge for yourself.

heres the GMMG site

I checked it out on youtube, it sounds good, but I like the sound of my SLP better... This one sounds like my old Z28's exhaust....

Thumbs up

Will your car still pass inspection with the shorties and high flow cats?
Reason I ask is, the shorties really aren't going to give you that much more power. The high flow cats may not pass your smog test. I may be wrong on the cats though??
GOOD LUCK!

Thanks man! As far as I know, it'll pass... My buddy has an 01 with Hi-flos and it passes, I don't think he still has his stock manifolds tho...

The car will pass the sniffer but you bring up a good point. 01-02 cars got revised exhaust manifolds and because of this you probably will not notice much of a gain to the shorties. If mids are legal it may be a better way to go.

BINGO! You said Super83Z.
Do you go to the Bass Pro Shops car show in Foxboro at all? I'm looking to go to the next one. I think it's next week, the 16th.

Mid length headers are ILLEGAL in California. Any headers that change the stock location of the cats are illegal. Only CARB approved shorties will pass the visual. Sucks, I know. I'm considering the edelbrock shorties myself. Not a huge benefit over my 02 manifolds, but they are cooler looking than stock...and every little bit helps.

Also, only factory style cats are legal here. That being said, the Magnaflow high flow I had on my thirdgen passed the sniffer with flying colors--my smog guy "passed" me on the visual
