cam swap throwing cam position sensor code
I had a NF cam installed back in july. Recently ive been get a CEL for the cam position sensor. Thing is it'll come on for a few days then go away on its own. As far as drivability or hard starting these issues haven't occurred. Is this normal with a cam swap? My tuner said hes had this happen with certain grinds in the past. Any input will help CELs drive me crazy especially after being cammed.

No it's not normal to have that happen. Since the problem just occurred now and you have no hard starting/etc, I am going to assume you guys used the correct cam sprocket during the install. Is it an LS3 or an L99 to LS3 conversion?

When I have seen issues like this in the past, it can be a number of things.
Your cam position sensor is a magnetic pickup. So if there is a abnormal amount of metal in the oil, it will collect on the cam position or crank position sensors and block their "view" of the wheel. If the crank sensor is blocked, the car will not run. If the cam sensor gets bad enough it will be hard to start but the car will still run. My suggestion first is to not drive the car until you can get to the front cover and pull the sensor out. Check to see if it has metal on it, or if it has had contact with something. The other thing that can happen is the cam gear can come loose, and that will walk forward hitting the sensor. If that is the case, then you need to fix it, and do not drive or start it, until it is finished. |

Could be anything in the "circuit"
Look for any loose connections first. Can you clear the code? How soon does it come back?

The code will come up then go away on its own. But when I scan it I get the p0340 cmp code.

Im confident Ivan will figure it out. Just wanted to see if anyone else had the same issue. Especially since I gotta tow my car 4 hrs to get the car to SWS. Ill be going back this Tuesday and mean while having a few other things done. Hopefully my next trip to SWS will be to have an ECS s/c installed and tuned.

The code can be cleared. Its come up twice this month, so I cant give you a set time or mileage its pretty much random. Last time I was going across town code came up and on the way home it cleared itself. I dont wanna drive it till I get it checked out. I got a new sensor just in case.

No metal or any contact on the sensor. Ivan at SWS is replacing it with a new sensor.
