Well Technically his name would be SkyFire, until he crashes into the glacier and is trapped for a few decades before being discovered by the Autobots and reprogrammed. Then he'd become JetFire. And he should be a F-14 IMO. but thats not likely since the F-14 is outdated.

The F-14's replacements still don't have the speed or the range (flight, radar, and weapons) of the Tomcat, though the systems on board are aging. However, the SR-71 is even older at around 50 years now and nothing (official) has been able to come close to what it does let alone beat it.
oh right, Shunt . . . anyon seen him yet?

Skyfire/Jetfire. The names are actually both correct. In the cartoon he was Skyfire, in the comics/toys he was Jetfire. What his name is is one of those arguments that will go on forever with Transformer fans, just like whether Rumble is red or blue. (He's BLUE!) He starts out as a Decepticon (in G1) before he realizes he doesn't really agree with their methods. Though he hates aligning himself against his old friend Starscream. That said, I've always much preferred SKYfire. |

The SR-71 did have a close rival though, the MIG-25 and MIG-31. Both were able to get up to Mach 2.83 or something close to there, and there was speculation it could go faster. I think, though, the SR-71 was still better, as there were something like 700+ USSR missles fired at it without ever bringing one down. They'd just go WOT and run away from the missles. I think the top speed of those, officially, was Mach 3.3, but I've read there were pilots who'd reached higher speeds. One thing to remember was it was designed to run at, at least, those speeds regularly. That's awesome. But I digress. I vote F-14 or F-15

One plane that might have made things real interesting would have been the Avro Arrow. Odds are you've never heard of it. Unvailed the same day as sputnik launched, it reached mach 2 at 75% throttle with test engines. In the final version, this would be equivelent to about half throttle. It wouldn't be able to reach mach 3, probably would have reached 2.5 or better. But it would have been damm impressive for a Canadian company to do in the 50's. Now into wildass speculation . . . consider what the replacement for that could have done 20 years later. If only . . . (this thread has been brought way off topic by a Canadian who wants to be an aerospace engineer, thus the Avro CF-105 Arrow is the greatest plane in history in his mind)

If we're hoping for a plane to take on Starscream, it had better be an F-35 and not one of the last-generation jets.
/Off topic I'm actually going through the Navy's equivalent of SWAT training right now so I'm getting a kick out of these replies. Keep it up fellas.

Have you heard of the Valkerie? I forget the designation, but this one was a promising jet also; Mach 3+ bomber. I think the US produced a prototype, but it was scrapped thanks to Kennedy or someone in that era. Too bad. This is a great discussion. (Sorry for )
