So the DMV denied my plate.

The dmv denied my plate in a letter that stated I cannot use a number in place of a letter to spell a word. The plate I think I saw on this site or another Camaro site and liked it so I checked and it was available in California so i tried to get it. The plate I picked out was V1LE8R. And because I had a "1" instead of an "I" they said I cannot use it as it might confuse law enforcement. I checked and the other plate is still available using an "I". I'm thinking wtf because I have a plate with 1LE in it already but didn't like it. Here's the letter they sent me

Has anyone had success getting the dmv to overturn a decision like this?

I doubt they'll overturn it. It's obviously up to them so you're better off choosing something else. I went through the same thing a while back. Back in the days you could mix letters and numbers but not anymore. It is what it is.

How long before you knew it was denied after you filed the original request? I've been waiting on my custom plates going on 10 weeks, its taking forever!

chargerfan2... Tough break.

If it's any consolation to ya', I just recently had a plate denied by the NCDMV... "BADAZZSS"

I applied for it online, and it was approved... but about a week later, I got a letter in the mail much like yours saying that it was approved in error & that the plate would be offensive to others.

I thought I had gotten away with getting it, but I guess they actually use human beings to check behind the computers!

I think I requested it at the end of April or beginning of May.

So I called them today and they said it was definitely because I tried to use a number in place of a letter to spell out a name. Their website clearly states though you cannot do that to order a similar plate as someone else. I told them that VILE8R was available so it wasn't a copy of another plate in existence. They said I could get that plate since it had the "I" in it. I told my wife F them I have a 1LE not an ILE. Oh well I guess it's to be expected the way this state has been run the last 30 years.

My online plate request was approved using this.

I didn't dare send for it though.

A guy on Long Island not too far from me got this approved by NYS DMV. He was just as shocked as anyone that they approved it:

Kalifornia.

Here in PA, I have two numbers in place of letters on my vanity plate. No problems.
