3.6L LLT cleaning - first step PCV Mod before valve cleaning
Hi all. First time here and thanks to Everyone for their input over the years.
We bought my Wife's 2011 2LT/RS new, but I'm only learning now about GDI and all the problems with dirty intake valves and such. As most of you are, I'm VERY disappointed with GM's lack of telling the general public about these issues. Anyway, I've just done the PCV Mod, and have ordered a borescope and intake gasket kit to see how bad the car is. I hope it's not too bad, but expect it to be ugly. My plan is to remove the top plate on the Intake Manifold (inspection cover?) and have a look at the Intake Valves. I'll try to load pics, but being new here I'm not sure what will happen. I'm used to forums which store/allow uploads of pics. Stay tuned ... Last edited by Greg P; 03-23-2021 at 05:53 PM. |

Not sure yet how to insert pics, or if I may upload to Camaro5. I've tried to do so from forums I'm on but not sure how to link the stuff.
I've tried inserting a jpg over text. Any help is appreciated |

Below the message body, below the "Submit Reply"/"Preview Post" buttons, you'll see "Attach Files" and a "Manage Attachments" button; click on the button and a window will pop up; in the window click on a "Choose File" button, find the file on your computer, then click the "Upload" button. Before submitting click on Preview Post and you'll see your pics.
How many km on the engine? I checked mine at ~35,000 and they weren't too bad. I installed a catch can and then eventually cleaned them via walnut blasting - fairly simple to do yourself if you have a compressor.

Thanks for the input! I'd like to link full-sized photos rather than itty bitty attachments. I'll work on it when I have more time.
Car currently has 32,7xx kms, so about 20,300 miles. I'll get some pics up after the borescope and gaskets are in-hand. Car is misfiring cold but not consistently. All my days of research are pointing to dirty intake valves. If the valves aren't dirty I'll start swapping coils and spark plugs around. Yes I've seen info on walnut blasting but am leaning towards the chem/brush manual method. Seeing the posts from years ago with a couple members mentioning too much oil and such to use crushed walnut. We'll see this weekend!! Last edited by Greg P; 03-23-2021 at 05:37 PM. |

Can always use a free image host, and put images in with links, by clicking the image
icon, and paste the link to the picture. Here is with 200,000 miles, and I run CRC Valve Cleaner trough the intake every 20,000 miles, or it idles rough on start-up, and gets so bad that it backfires out the intake manifold: THESE ARE CYLINDERS 1-6 Yep, pretty nasty. The only way to clean them right is walnut blasting. The intake is easy to take off. The gasket is reusbale about 3-times. You can get the a walnut blasting kit, that comes with the attachment and all that. make sure each cylinder you to is TDC on the compression stroke, the intake valves must be closed. |

PCV MOD, is for 10-11, and early V6.
Pull the PVC out of the valve cover. Drill the bottom holes to 5/64th. Drill the top hole to 7 to 9/64th. When I pulled mine, one hole was clogged, and the other was close to it. There is no check-ball or spring, it's an open orifice device. These are how small the bottom holes are: TOP: Later 2012-2014 TOP: HOW-TO: | There is also a new Valve Cover gasket for the passenger side that closes off that big area under the PCV: That greatly cuts down the oil consumption through the PCV. |

Thanks for the pics I've already done the PCV drill mod. 7/64" top and 5/64" bottom. I'll try to link pics ... As for the upgraded cam cover gasket, I've seen info on it, just not ready to delve that deep into the car yet. I know I'll need to do it soon, and am still pondering a CC. That's for another thread. |

This is my Wife's LLT before and after I did the PCV Mod
Sorry for the MONSTER pics. I'll work on that next time!! Here's the Intake pics and some disappointing Intake Valve pics. The borescope I bought was cheap but does the trick. The pics are terrible but show I need to re+re the intake and manually clean the valves. After viewing the Valve pic online I see it's not worth anyone looking at. I'll post clear pictures once I have the Intake Plenum off. Probably not for another month or 2 as I'll wait for a nice-weather 3-day weekend. Again, sorry the valve pic is crap Last edited by Greg P; 03-29-2021 at 10:13 PM. |
