Rearview Camera
I'm probably going to replace the stereo at some point and there will be backup and front parking cameras involved. In the meantime, I was considering a new rearview with camera, but taking it a step further. Buy one with external rear camera. Take that apart and mount in the useless shark fin. Use it as an active camera based rear view similar to how newer vehicles are being setup. Anyone do this and have success? If so, what hardware choices did you use?

Sounds interesting. Looking forward to seeing what others have to say.

I bought the shark fin from a newer Camaro and did the swap that way. It is super clear and precise. Not like cheap ones that you can buy anywhere. I think a camera would be hard to mount in the current shark fin due to the size and angles of it.

Great point. So a 6th gen fin fits the roof line well? Got any specifics on part numbers and other stuff you did?

Gen5diy has the whole kit available. It comes black and I went and had it painted to match. The mirror is the expensive part of the kit. That is what makes the majority of the expense. If you can find a used one or out of a wrecked vehicle, it will cut the expense down.
As for the roof line, it works. It is not perfect, but it is hard to see from a distance. My ultimate goal is to purchase a 6th gen antenna without the stuff in it and sand it down to try to match it better, then pull the camera one and try it as well. Just haven't had the time to do it. I do have pictures in one of my threads of it as well. I'll link it as well. https://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=605010 |

I bought the mirror from the dealer. The place I was working at got really good deals with our local GMC. So I gave them a part number and got it. Then contacted Gen5 and said I need everything but the mirror. I originally found a used mirror from a Camaro and found out that didn't fit and needed to be from a truck. I'm not sure about the 3rd party camera as I would assume it is plugged in with an RCA. The GM was not. I just know from people telling me that this mirror is way more clear than any they have tried to use that was 3rd party stuff. Overall, I'm glad I went with it.
