Removed my Hurst

I never got used to the Hurst, stiff and notchy. Throws were short for sure however, I always felt I was hitting the syncros too hard on the 2 to 3 shift. Maybe that is why the GM Hurst will only be 20% instead of 40%. I put in the stock shifter and call me crazy but I really like it. I know there are other shifters out there but I'll keep my stock one...

Go with what works for you!

Any issues going back to the stock setup?

It's all good. Nice feel, longer throw, rubberband feel, LOL

I tend to gorrila the shifts, The Hurst didn't like that. I guess you can't take the M22 rock crusher out of my system, LOL

That sounds drastic! Was it that bad???

bobby35ny:

My next and first serious mod on my SS was going to be a shifter. It is scheduled to happen before I thinker with the suspension.

I have been deciding between a BARTON and a HURST.

Your post puzzles me: why was the HURST so much to your dislike that you opted to go back to your stock??

I read your entry and seems the only issue was the gear action on 2nd and 3rd.

I wonder if shift engagement, gear selection "feel" were also below your expectations with the HURST.

Can you please share a bit more on what annoyed you so much on this aftermarket shifter???

Thank you,

The Flash

A short-throw shifter gives you shorter throws but LESS leverage... so by pure physics you should be hitting the synchros HARDER with the stock shifter (it has more leverage).

BTW- I tried a stock shifter again in my buddy's car the other day... it felt like rowing a boat with a wet noodle. But I guess some people like that (or don't know any better).

i thought the TR-6060 had internal shift stops so you dont have to worry about over extending the shift forks.

It's preference I guess, The Hurst was very "stiff". I would try to find a car with one installed and row thru the gears before you decide. I did DO just that and I wasn't crazy about it but my friend said, don't worry you will get used to it. Well I really never got used to it. LOL.

One other thing I want to add. On everyday driving, not racing, I rest my arm on the the side of the cup holders and console pad. so I'm really shifting with my fingers and wrist with no real arm movement. Unless you have forearms like Popeye, your not doing that with a Hurst.

It does have internal stops. Keep in mind, The stock shifter has a center rubber isolater in the middle of the stick under the boot. It serves 2 purposes. one is to stop vibration and two is when you hit the stops its cushioned.

when u get a short throw its going to feel like ur being harder on the gear because its harder for you to shift because of loss of leverage...
Im planning on going with MGW down the road..

I like mine, it took 500 miles for me to stop smashing it like the long throw. I just don't miss hitting 5th gear going for 3rd like the stock shifter always did. Other than that I could take it or leave it.

After having the Hurst every other stick I drive feels like I'm shifting with a broom handle.

That's what I'm use to, and with a Hurst shifter that was like 12" long and a T-handle ... It seem to always get my knuckles going from 2nd to 3rd and the dang handle was always coming loose ...

Thinking back, these new OEM shifters are pretty sweet in comparison ...
