Moving to Colorado
Moving to Colorado in a month and have an inspection question. I currently don't run catalytic converters on my Camaro. Will there be a smog test when I register my Camaro? It also has a tune so no check engine light is on.

You will have to get emission testing after your car is over seven years old. Then it will be a OBD plug in test for a few years. There are also road side emission testing around the Denver metro area. There are parts of rural Colorado that don't have testing at all. You may eventually encounter a visual test if you don't have cat's. Welcome to the boomtown.

May be too late for you.
What city are you moving to? Like said before some areas of Colorado do not test at all. In the 7 county Denver Metro area they require testing and Cats. Any vehicle 2006 or newer they will do an OBD II test, run a mirror under the car to see and do a pressure test on the gas cap. Cars are exempt from testing for the first 7 years after manufacturing. They also do roadside testing that if you pass twice within a certain period you are mailed a waiver. If you are not throwing a check engine light you will likely pass. The people running the stations are pretty quick running the mirror under the vehicle and with car as low as the Camaro I doubt they could see anyways. Worst case you fail a visual inspection, there is no fine or penalty, you simply have to get it fixed to comply. Once it complies you don't have to pay for the second test. |
