Canadian 2010 2011 2012 Camaros: How to Bypass AutoHeadlights Quickly

Ok so I finally figured it out and it was trial and error. I still dont believe there was any post on Camaro5 that properly explains which wires to resistor so here it goes.

Super Easy:

Pull the vent up in the dash using a flat head screw driver (put an old thin shirt over the flat head to protect your plastic from scuffing)... slowly pry up and work your way around. This is actually very easy to do. The plastic vent comes out along with the auto-light sensor.

Use a shoelace or string, tie one end to the black three wire plug and the other side of the shoelace/string to the back part of the light sensor (harness). This will prevent the wire from falling into the dash JUST IN CASE.

You need a 1k ohm 0.5w resistor which you can get online for like 12 cents plus tax and shipping which is what I got.

Unplug the wire from the autoheadlight sensor...

Ok and now the golden info, no one seemed to want to explain this in this mod, you need to insert the resistor into the end of the wire plug in the holes that lead to the black wire and white wire! Not the grey wire, I did this, no effect and it caused a cel. After trial and error, that grey wire goes to the led light in the sensor which is your security light when the car is armed.

You may also run a wire seperately connecting back the security led end in the harness (its the pin by itself furthest from the two pins that are next to each other) to the grey wire in the wire plug; I left mine disabled as I couldnt care less about this atm and I will eventually get a cool looking led light and mount on the dash later on.

Use some electrical tape and go around the resistor a few times and then place a zip tie over the tape so that it never comes off. Electrical tape falls apart over time so I never fully trust it.

Tuck the cord back into the dash, push the vent back in and your done!

What this mod accomplishes:

Full control over your Camaro's lights regardless whether its night or day. This mod is very cool and it doesnt disable the drl so everything is still legal.

Another thing I should mention, when you turn the dial for your lights, your dash lights and ambient lights all come on as usual. The only differance is now you have to manually turn them on at night. If you forget your lights on, that annoying chime sounds when you open your door to prevent this from happening.

You can also now drive with just halos on in the evening if you prefer. For some people who had issues with there headlights coming on in the day because there windows were tinted to dark, this mod fixes that issue too!

Finally this mod makes a Canadian camaro just like its American brother giving you full control. Only differance here, you dont need to take the spring out of the dial. People with Camaros in the U.S just need to take the spring out of the light dial to perform this mod.

New Options Unlocked With Mod (while in drive/gear @ night)
1. Only DRL on at night (halos and hid off)
2. DRL and Halos on at night (hid off)
3. DRL, Halos and HID on (all lights turned on)
4. If you never performed the permanent DRL mod then you also have the option in park to have all lights completely off. I have the DRL on forever mod so I get reverted to option 1.

Below is a photo of the Camaro in gear at night after the mod was performed. Notice my HIDs are off but all other lights are on. My 68LED Fogs are brighter than stock Camaro headlights so I really have no need for HIDs in the city.

https://secure.dipmicro.com/store/R3J10-2 - This is the resistor you will need costing you only 12 cents .

I hope everyone enjoys this mod! Cheers!!

So what are you saying here? In the Canadian cars you cannot control the headlights?

Yes, in the evening the autoheadlight sensor kicks in and overrides your headlight dial preventing you from turning off/on any lights. The off function is disabled on Canadian cars even if you turn the dial. It also randomly makes your headlights come on when you go under an overpass or through a small tunnel. Some people even reported the headlights turning on in well shaded areas.

You cannot control the DRL's during the day. We cannot turn them off even if you turn the headlight switch to the left. On the plus side though, we can run with the DRL's and the halos.

Resurrecting... in case anyone with a made-for-Canada Camaro is interested.

After one of my RS headlight bulbs blew I asked my dealer - out of curiosity - how much a replacement bulb would cost and they said $300.00 plus tax lololol so I started looking up how to disable the headlights from coming on unnecessarily (stupid things come on 10 times more often than they need to - like every time I pull into/out of the garage or go under an overpass...) and I found this thread; mine's a 2014 but this still works. It was a pain in the ass getting the vent off because it's 3" below the windshield and too far to reach while sitting in the seat, but I got it.

I ended up using a 3k ohm, 1 watt resistor as that's what was "available" to me.

FYI, if anyone is wondering, the bulbs are D3S type, 35 watt and 4300k colour, and are ~$70 CAD for OEM ones on Amazon.

Can’t believe I missed this thread, but....

Circa 2013, i bought that thingy from Ofer or SJM (I forget which of the two vendors it was) that alllows you to shut off the DRL headlamps, while driving in the daylight. It works.

However, once dusk, like it or not, even with that nifty, DRL delete harness mod thingy installed, the headlights STILL come on automatically! You can throw stealth out the window.

The Canadian DRL is a true bitch to control.

Re-reading the OP’s opener, I am now wondering if I can supplement that procedure, with the DRL harness delete mod, and FINALLY after 5 years, get this to work properly???? Lol
