Stock cats with supercharger ??
If I stay in the mid 500s will my stock cats hold up? I really don't want headers or a cat delete

Survey says:
That was on the Whipple canned tune on an otherwise stock SS 1LE.

Dam lol, How many miles did that take to happen? Maybe ill just do cat deletes to save some money and keep it quieter. But I am afraid the stock npp will sound like crap after

Chris, how long were you running that canned tune before the cats went? Did Whipple have anything to say?
Sal, I've been running a S/C for a few thousand miles, custom tune, no codes so far - which i assume means they are still good. does the tune have anything at all to do with it or is it simply the amount of air and heat generated from the S/C?

Yeah, all the kits say they work with stock cats and headers just fine. He made it seem like I should just do it now to avoid a headache later on. I didn't get the vibe that he was just trying to upsell me or anything either. He didn't push it but he just said he thinks it could go bad later on. I hope i will be fine with the stock cat

You have too much invested. Do not skimp on something as critical as cats. Either go no cats or, for a mild build up, use GESI green cats available from Kooks. The heat generated by a supercharged engine can lead to cat melt down, may never happen, but the risk is real. Invest the money to remove cats and retune or use GESI style cats which are designed for supercharger use.

I defiantly like to do things the right away the first time around. I agree with what you are saying for sure. But I am def not trying to skimp on the headers or cat-delete pipes. I just really wanted to keep the stock setup cause I am happy with the sound and like being able to make it quiet when I want. But maybe I will order some Gesi cats, it will def be better to do it now on the first tune. Or maybe ill just put the extra money and get the ARH headers with cats from JTM. I was really trying to keep this not over the $10k mark. Headers will def push it to 12k which is not an issue but makes me start feeling like I should have just got a Zl1 lol. Also then i need better wires to handle the heat if i do the headers right? The extra heat was another reason I didn't want the headers. You know how the starters on these cars start acting up with heat , i don't want to have issues starting the car from it

You do not need new wires if you add LTs. Just get some plug sleeves for a little extra protection. ARH headers fit fine, no worries about harming the starter. You could have the LTs jet hot / ceramic coated. Cuts down underhood heat significantly.

The cats melted in about 5,000 miles, which included two track days and 50 or so autocross runs. Trips from the NYC area to NJMP, VIR, and Indiana.
The Whipple tune is garbage. They turned off the cat overtemp warning, so there wasn’t even a warning. I didn’t call Whipple because the fine print of their “warranty” is that it has to be installed by an ASE certified mechanic, and I did it myself. Driveability on the canned tune needs help too, as the throttle pedal vs throttle body map seems designed to give you big tip-in for an extreme sensation of power. It feels cool, but it makes performance driving harder. I just got the car back from Jannetty and haven’t had it on track yet, but throttle feels a lot better. I have both catless and green cat setups now. Learning from my experience, I’d use the Whipple tune to get it to a tuner, and get cat deletes for track work.

I know of at least one ZL1 owner who melted his cats. All stock.
