Luft Meister Magnetic Ride Shocks

Just cutting and pasting a note off the CTSV forum......"Some have said that the Luft Meisters are not MagnaRide Shocks. That they are just normal twin tube shocks that "tricks" the car into thinking they are MagnaRide to keep the suspension lights and warnings from triggering. True that they are not MagnaRide shocks, they are Electromagnetic with the same magneto-rheological fluid as the stock MagnaRide shocks. They can't say MRC (Magnetic Ride Control) or MagnaRide as those are trademarked technologies from the former General Motors/Delco chassis and suspension group that was sold to BWI (Beijing West Industries) Group. There is definitely a noticeable difference between Touring and Sport, so it is not just a trick."

Anyway, Luft Meister makes Mag ride replacement shocks for dozens of vehicles including Corvettes, CTSV's, Escalades and multiple other GM products plus dozens more for multiple manufacturers. I searched but don't see anything for the ZL1. How frustrating that the CTSV guys can buy them for peanuts and ZL1 owners are stuck for the moment. FWIW the shocks are made in China.

Appreciate this read. I am currently thinking about unloading my low mile SS for a 60K mile or less ZL1. One big hang up is the mag ride. My question is would you guys who own ZL1’s be willing to jump into one right now knowing there’s no new struts available and possibly not even in the future? I realize there are lots of other options for strut replacements but I would prefer for the car to work as intended.

I guess the lack of a response is a no. I am chasing a random suspension noise that occurs infrequently. Took it to the best mechanic in town and he got it replicate 1 time in a couple hours of driving over different types of bumps or potholes while simultaneously turning and going up or down a hill. He could find nothing wrong. When he had the car on the lift he mentioned that there was some type of TSB on the front struts but that all mine appeared fine and were operating properly (28K miles). Hawks Motorsports has at least 20 5th gen ZL1's so that's where I will try first if one started to leak or goes out as they are about 20 miles from me. If I went to coil overs I guess it would be Vengeance Racing which is about 2 hours away.
My local mechanic mentioned that he replaces mag ride shocks on a frequent basis on late model GM products. Said the ride is horrific when they go out. Think if I was buying anything I would steer clear of cars with Mag Ride or cars with a DCT transmission. My Hellcat and Scat Pack don't have either so one less thing to fail. Just my 2 cents. When it comes to the 5th gen they are hard to beat for bang for the buck so for someone on a budget it still might be a good choice. Like my HCRE but it was 90K. Probably get a pristine low mileage ZL1 for about half that.

I got mine at 63k miles in spring, 3 out of the 4 were bad. Rears I was able to get new from rock auto for 430ish +5% off and the one front that was bad I got from a salvage yard with 30k miles for 225 complete assembly.

Good info Rob. I just checked on Rock Auto and don't see those rears listed. Am I missing it or have they sold out at this point?
I think I need to just buy a new set of rears if there was anyone that had them (just in case) and then scramble for a front.

Edit: I do see these rears on Summit and the parts number is a match. A little confusing since they call them gas filled and not mag ride....

Guys, is this the correct rear strut for replacement on our ZL1? Just want to confirm before I drop $1300.

Yes Sir BSN, that's a saving of $322 over the Summit price. I see them now. Got tired of worrying about no parts so I will have these in case I keep the car. Can make a pass at the strip without worrying that a rear might go out. Thanks for saving this old man a few dollars.

You can also apply the 5% off coupon you can find on google on rockauto, so they come out decent

I read somewhere that the aftermarket suppliers cant do anything until the patent is up in 2025. Dont know how true that is.
