GM vice charman Lutz wants a higher gas tax

GM's vice charman Lutz suggests a $.25 higher gas tax will help consumers think about buying a smaller car. What a jerk......maybe he can afford it and wants to drive an econobox or a Volt, but higher gas prices would hurt Camaro sales. We pay enough in taxes already and our economy is struggling.

Lutz is a sharp guy. He's just trying to work with the government. The worst thing a bailed out GM can do is speak against government policy.

He may be a sharp guy, but I believe he's misguided. Higher taxes on gas might force people to buy smaller cars, but that might not benefit GM as much as it would foreign manufacturers. Every time gas jumps a lot Toyota and Honda sales seem to jump. Yes, I know a lot of them are made in the US, but they are still foreign owned. This is similar to the cash for clunkers that drove up import sales. The US manufacturers are building better small cars, but they haven't caught up to the imprts.

Like we need more taxes to pay. Let gas go to $5 a gallon and see how many Camaros are sold. GM's been bailed out once, you'd think they would have learned their lesson.. if it's working, leave it alone.

Keep the politics out of it. Regardless of ideology—and I guarantee he is not a socialist—he has a point. People buy big vehicles because there is no incentive to buy small vehicles. Do you think it is an coincidence that gas costs more in Europe and the average car is smaller there?

Gas costs more in Europe because of the tax structure. More taxes on fuel and less tax on other things so it is not a fair comparison with the USA.

That's exactly what he's getting at. People drive smaller cars in Europe BECAUSE the gas prices are higher.

And Lutz proposed a tax. Both are tax-related artificial price inflations that would push people dependent on that fuel to be more careful about what they drive.

Ford's chairman said basically the same thing about a year ago because they had to make a certain number of small cars that they couldn't move when the gas prices tumbled.

WTF

What happened last time gas prices went through the roof?

Let's just say the start of the perfect storm that wiped out 2 out of 3 of the big 3. As those two struggle to stay above water, do we really need gas prices shooting up again.

What we really need is $5 gallon gas, $5 gallon milk, and $5 lb hamburger. We'll drive less, lose weight, and all get in line for one of them pussified hybrids. Count me out.

Stay the hell out of manipulating gas prices unless it is in the downward direction I say.

[I respectfully deleted this post.]

I stand by Bob Lutz being a good, important GM figure.

When the Volt comes out, GM will have an advantage in extremely high-efficiency cars. While it's probably not Lutz's only reason, it's definitely something he would have been thinking about when he said it. One of the oldest underhanded tricks in the book is to get the government to tax or ban what your competitors are doing. People's jaws would drop if they saw how much the defense industry likes to sneak little "the Army will buy its XYZs from Globocorp" clauses into congressional bills.
