I heard they were going to drill a hole in the top of the gas pedal and mount a 40 pound tension spring to the seat anchor so it will always be pulled back to the idle position easily. There may have been some duct tape and bailing wire in there as well, have not seen the finished artist's rendering.

Finally, somehow this made it onto the news.

Toyota was saying that it was 'just the floormats' at first. Even when the cars that were accelerating death traps didn't have the friggin floormats in them!

It couldn't possibly be that they suck at building cars......could it?

A little late there, Toyota.
By they, you must mean the U.S Goverment. The Goverment forced Toyota to suspend their sales. Looking for article......

EDIT: Found it

Toyota has quite the PR nightmare on its hands. The boiling cauldron of complaints surrounding unintended acceleration issues bubbled over this month with two separate but giant recalls. The latest involves eight Toyota models that contain defective accelerator pedal mechanisms that could stick over time due to wear.

There is no fix available for the pedal mechanisms yet and dealers have continued to sell new models affected by the recall, so Toyota announced yesterday that it's suspending the sale and production of these eight models for the week of February 1. It was a bold move that made headlines, as Toyota stands to lose a lot of money. On the other hand, the Japanese automaker got some pats on the back for doing the right thing.

Turns out, the decision to stop producing these vehicles wasn't made by Toyota alone. The Detroit News reports that Toyota is required by law to stop selling the vehicles since there is no fix available yet. David Strickland, the new administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said that Toyota consulted with his agency, which informed the automaker of its obligations and it complied. That still doesn't answer why these recalled vehicles were being sold five days after the recall was announced.

Nevertheless, Toyota spokesman Mike Michels is reported saying that the company's decision to stop selling the recalled vehicles was voluntary, but that they also had a legal requirement to do so. How do you voluntary do something that you're obligated to do?

In related news, General Motors has confirmed to Autoblog's sister site, AOL Autos, that it is putting a hold on all remaining Pontiac Vibe sales, as the model is under recall for the same throttle issue that afflicts its mechanical twin, the Toyota Matrix. Fortunately for GM, there are apparently only six Vibe units left in stock nationwide as the brand's shutdown continues.

There seems to be two problems because the rubber floor mats that were put over top of the carpet ones were causing some trouble. So there is some legitamcy with the mat thing to an extenet. Like them or hate them Toyota is a pretty stand up company and they have done the right thing and I can guarantee that they will comeout of this stronger. They wont allow this to kill them off.

One thing no one is talking about in this thread is the fact that toyota tried to half-ass the problem with a floormat tie-down. Nice going, toyota. Let's look at the rest of your recall history...you are still trying to deny the rollover recalls and court cases about deaths involved with your 4-runners. The frames on tacomas rusting so bad the vehicle was not roadworthy. Your latest POS, the TURDRA pickup, and the fact that the spare tire carrier rusts out and fails, so the spare hits the road causing a road hazard. Nice going, toyota. You wanted to beat GM soooooo bad, you have screwed yourselves. I say you deserve it. Karma sucks, doesn't it?

Its not up to them to decide if it will hurt them. Consumers ultimately have the final verdict on this. And GM, Ford, VW, Honda, and all the others should jump at this golden opportunity. Might as well kick 'em while they're down right?

On Good Morning America they were reporting that Toyota Reps say if your car starts to turn into "Christine" (Stephen King's book/movie) to SLAM on the breaks and throw the car into neutral.

That's the best they can say with the amount of calls that are coming in from concerned owners.

Craps out of control,I would be hauling my butt over to GM and take them up on their offer,to get me out of my "assisted-suicide vehicle".

Maybe Toyota can get Jack Kevorkian as a spokesperson....
