But I'm just glad it's back!http://www.camaro5.com/forums/images/smilies/bow.gif
because the base V8 is an SS.

look at every other chevy model... nearly all of them have an SS trim.

the SS is no longer the SuperSport badge of yesteryear. the Z28 has always been a performance package. back in the day, it was just another RPO code that could be checked and added to the base car that came with a package of upgrades. then, it evolved into its own trim line. back when the 4th gens came about, the f-body was already on the cutting board. GM launched 2 models, a base model v6 and a top tier Z28. they had no plans of adding an additional model line. then in 96, SLP started modifying Z28's and rebadging them as Z28/SS's. GM jumped on board and you could order an SS from the factory, (tho it was still built as a Z28, then shipped to SLP for final upgrades).

now that GM has brought back the camaro, they knew full well that if they could, they would want to run the 3 traditional tiers of camaros, base level, mid level, top level.

knowing this, they made the v6 and the SS. because the Z28 is top dog.

From a different perspective: Back in 70 I had a 'Cuda 440+6 convt. At the Lewisville drag strip a Boss 302 was running four classes lower than me. He was running in the mid 12's and I was in the high 13's. He made the final in Pure Stock and ran a '70 Super Bee 440+6. The Boss had a full tree advantage, but he just sat there and ran on the SB's light. The Boss won by 5-6 lengths. So the big hp big blocks wern't necessarily the boss on the strip.

Yup. I have a neighbor with a '68 Z28, that, at the time was original, and he added the Cross-Ram and ran it past many of the Big Block cars of the day. It doesn't have the DZ anymore, but I think it's pretty cool to see some of those "little" Small Blocks from back in the day duke it out with the Big Blocks. There's something to be said for a tuned Big Block though

After driving 556 supercharged hp for a few minutes, the only question you'll have is
"Were's the toilet paper?" My father has the Caddy with the LSA engine in it, WOW!!
What a beast.

In my opion I will be kind of ticked if a z28 comes out to have more power than my 2010 ss after all I didn't spend $50,000 on the car and mods to have it surpassed by a new stock model. After all it took alot of time, money, and energy to get my car to where it is. (tvs2300, kooks longtube headers 1 7/8, high flow cats, catback magnaflow muffler delete, cold air intake, front and rear swaybars, short throw shift, custom tune, lighting and cosmetic mods, so far)

Man it's like anything else once you buy something another version of the samre thing comes out that's better than what you have. Happens everytime I purchase a computer or tv..Think I have the best out there and BAM out comes one better for the same price I paid for mine. I've learned to ignore anything that comes out after I buy something. saves the aggravation!

BINGO...
Becca...either upgrade or be happy with what you have....but to expect a company not to improve it's products each year is only going to bring you dissappointment...
Besides...modding is half the fun...and from your list even if you bought the mythical Z it wouldn't stay stock...

Like computers that you mention....sometimes best to settle in on a model, and enjoy.

Apologies to tom692010 - Initially, I quoted the wrong post; fixed...

Assuming you want a Z28, is it fair to ask if you feel that Z28 isn't necessary because you couldn't wait for it and made a bad@$$ car out of your SS? People, like me, who've been waiting for Z28 should be @$$-out because you don't think it should be made because it might outperform your SS when it was stock? WOW...

That's exactly it. Assuming Z28 comes in 2012, what, in two or three years, Camaro will be on a different platform, and from what it's starting to look like, it'll be a lot leaner and return, closer, to what it started out as, in '67. Unless government regulations really come to bare on these kinds of cars, the will get faster and more efficient through the years, so it's not anything new that newer models usually perform better.

Kudos

I don't have any prob with stock z28 being faster than stock ss, I would be mad if has more than the 550 rwhp I have after buying mods and voiding powertrain warr.

Though I'd LOVE to see 550 RWHP stock, I really doubt it. Considering CTS-Vs range from about 440 to almost 500 (depending on tranny and dyno) I just can't see that happening. I believe Z28 would see much of the same drivetrain components, like upgraded TR6060/6L90E, and probably heavier driveshaft/rear end/rear axles, so I think those are going to suck a little more power than OEM SS parts. I DO believe there are opportunities in the intake and exhaust that the engineers could take advantage of. The intake looks really choked in the routing and the exhaust is heavily muffled. Maybe GM could also develop some higher flowing tubular manifolds, much likd the 5.0, to bump power up a little more. The fact of the matter is, is that the '11 GT500 just lost like 100 pounds, and got more power, so since I believe Z28 is going to be at least another 200 pounds more, it better be making close to 580-600 FWHP in order to compete. I really don't see a huge diet and content loss happening; when was the last car GM really stripped? The B4C Z28? I believe those still had radios, A/C, and other smaller amenities, but I just don't see a car with significant CF, no rear seats/AC/radio/etc. I think it's going right after the GT500, and will be equipped to directly compete.

JMVHO.
