Firstly, you are 15 and you want a 420hp sports car? Are you off your rocker? I have pulled enough stupid teenagers out of their daddy's wrecked BMW to know that it's a bad idea. I can't believe that kids these days, yes I'm calling you out here too, just expect their parents to buy them a brand new car. Whatever happened to working two jobs during the summer to buy your own car, your gas, and your own insurance? I blame the internet, and television, and Megan Fox. One last point, if you want to be considered an "adult" while you drive around daddy's SS you might want to retake sophomore English.
My post was pointed in the direction of the poster who was calling BS about $150 a month for insurance on an SS.

That being said, I agree that a 2010 Camaro may not be the best idea for a first car, and that his first car should be a beat up something or other as he will appreciate a new(er) Camaro when the time comes. As Jason Lee said in Vanilla Sky, "Without the bitter, the sweet just ain't as sweet." But you can make an argument why it would be better to get him a newer car. Safety, fewer maintenance costs, etc. I don't think he should be denied a Camaro just because "it's fast." If he gets an LS, it is governed somewhere near 120 MPH. You can go that fast in a Hyundai.

Regardless, whatever this kid's mom wants to do is her business, and none of ours.

Lastly, I'm sure the part where you wrote, "... yes I'm calling you out here too..." wasn't directed at me because my name is the only one you'll see on my loan, and the only money I get comes in the form of a check from my employer in return for my services. So, I'm guessing that was directed at the OP and other people in this thread who are under the age of 18.

Get a base car. Smaller engine, not as many expensive features for the insurance company to potentially replace = lower rates. Also get a bright color. As you will be more easily noticed by other drivers, this reduces your chances of being hit by another driver, getting you a slightly lower rate. If you do indeed pull off straight A's, then bring your report cards. Some insurance companies offer discounts for good grades.

I think you should look online for a used LS. There are many websites: autotrader.com cars.com vehix.com carmax.com and many more. Your insurance is gonna be high though and if you'll be driving it like you stole it, then you better start lookin' for two jobs...

Insurance is a factor of quite a few things:

  • Driving Record
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Commute Mileage
  • How many of "those" vehicles have been stolen in that area. (This what causes some locations to be expensive)
  • Cost to repair. (4WD trucks have higher insurance because of the 4WD and heavy duty parts)
  • % of uninsured motorists in that area. In 95 I moved from Louisiana to San Antonio, My rates went up. Was told SA has a crap load of uninsured and unlicensed drivers. You pay for them.
  • Amount of coverage you are required by state law (This varies)

Note: If you drive your car less that 6k a year you can have it insured as a recreational vehicle which lowers the premium a good bit. I will assume some of these parents are doing that for their kids cars. If you do, call your agent, get it changed.

Males have a higher rate. I don't remember why, but there was an article about it on MSN a couple weeks ago. I'm sure a Google search would offer some insight.

Edit: This is a good article on the subject. http://www.sirc.org/publik/driving_risk.shtml

Another is how much the liability is for. You can get cheap insurance if your limits are 25,000/50,000 compared to 100,000/300,000. Yet another way is to combine homeowner's insurance, life insurance, fire insurance, etc. to lower the cost of your auto policy. Raising your collision and comprehensive deductibles to their maximum amounts will also lower the premium.

If the kid's dad is paying $150, good for him. I find it believable as I'm only paying $115 a month for mine. Maybe you should spend your time finding a cheaper insurance provider rather than ripping this kid apart on an online forum.

One of the best posts I've seen in a LOOOOOONG time...

if you're married/have children also affects your insurance rate. along with being in school and get good grades.

Yeah I wish my parents could have afforded to get me a car when I was 16, but they couldnt so oh well. Would I buy my kids one? Hell no! They got a Yaris and a G5.

I am glad your Mom wants to buy this but your insurance as stated is going to be high. My son pays 149 per month on the Toyota Yaris - with good driver, good grades, safety lessons, multi car, and home owners discounts applied! He is 19 now. Insurance will be your bugaboo. If mom is willing, cool, but please be careful and only peel out a little in a big parking lot
