Removing stripes, worried about paint.
So I have recently been thinking bout taking off the rally stripes and adding just hoodspears to clean up the car a bit. Only problem is that I am worried what it might look like where the stripes have been. What would you all suggest?

Heat the stripes up a little and pull them off. Its really that easy. Also go over the area with some sort of adhesive remover and clay bar. I took my factory installed rally stripes off and they came off easily. The surface looked clean but as soon as it got dusty you could see the outline on the hood and trunk. I went over it with the above steps and it was truly clean after that.
*no need to wax it until after you put your spears on since you'll have to strip everything off to get a good installation of the spears |

From experience I pulled my stripes off min about 3 month ago and if you look at an angle in direct sunlight you can see exactly where they were. Or at least the pin stripe. And when I wash it (actually haven't noticed lately) the water would act differently where the stripes were as opposed to where they weren't. You could always full them off get an orbital sander with a 3000 grit pad and go over the area were the stripe edges were and smooth it out the buff Don't worry 3000 grit is like sanding with a tissue won't damage paint I will just knock that edge off and one you buff sanding marks will disappear

I talked with Dylan. He told me to do what I was thinking myself. Just to run a few passes of polish over it with the PC and it should be good to go

I'll be doing this within the next few days. Owner of a SW with the Grand Sport [hash or fender] stripes. My car was all one shade of white upon purchase but now has noticeable differences between panels. I expect the stripes to be no different.

I'm with the people recommending abrasives. If the stripes were on there a long time, the edges where they once were will be very distinct and hard or impossible to remove with clay. A light finishing polish and a machine should be able to take them out.

Shouldn't have any problems with your 2011, just use a heat gun or blow dryer and peel up. Red is a forgiving color. Check out Adam's Polishes they have a some good products to help with it. |

You will most probably need to polish afterwards, and probably use some good cleaners to get the residue off.
The most damage I see when people remove stripes are the fingernails and tools that people try to use to take vinyl off. 2011 shouldnt be too bad, and SC doesnt have the worst sun possible. Just be easy with it, take your time, buff it afterwards and add the spears. |
