Perpetual Motion

If you had a Volt and installed an inverter to produce 120 volts, could you then plug it into your Volt to charge your Volt while driving?

That's a fun thought. How/where would you hook it up though? Using the wheels as a sort of turbine?

Then hook it up to a dyno in your backyard and plug your house into it (that's a joke btw)

Thats the most creative way to waste electricity (or gas) that I've ever heard of

hes talking about a 12v to 120v inverter that would plug into an accessory power in the car and then plug that into the Volts plug in...not sure it would actually work but it is an interesting thought

I think it would shorten the life of your batteries, constantly topping off, no deep cycling...

It wouldn't top them off though, just slowly drain them.

That won't work, Energy can neither be created nor destroyed and you are consuming energy to move the car, whatever would be left in the ACC lighter would be stored energy. So this would actually waste more energy because no system is perfect and heat from the charger would waste battery while the rest would go back where it came from.

You can kind of think about it like this. Imagine a regular combustion engine vehicle. Now imagine you splice a line into the fuel line that returns gasoline to the tank while you drive. That's all you would be doing here, just with electricity.

Almost ... to be even more accurate, you should include something about a leak (to approximate the losses from the 12V DC to 120V AC conversion)

Perpetual motion is only found in 4 year olds at bedtime.

No, not serious, just putting it out there for thought and discussion.

What we need here on Camaro5 is a think tank.

Good point, then imagine that the splice is cobbled together using a botched epoxy job
