a couple things to remember here
first, just adding him to his parents policy will increase their premiums on all their vehicles. it doesn't matter which one he drives, or which one he's assigned to. because he will be insured for all the vehicles, the insurance company will assume he could possibly drive any of the vehicles. second, being on his parents policy will cut the amount in about half............so long as they don't assign him to the camaro. they can assign him to another vehicle and he can still drive the camaro and be insured. that's possible because he's on the policy, and the policy insures the drivers regardless of what they drive. much the same way it works for spouses. each one has an assigned vehicle, but if the husband drives the wife's car everything is still covered. however, doing it that way and getting in an accident in the camaro could result in a huge rate increase. I just went through this with my daughter. went out and bought her a 2001 civic and kept in in my name. but when I added her to my policy, the premium for every vehicle went up about 40%. even though she'll never drive my camaro, it now cost me about 150 more every 6 months to insure it. |

My daughter turned 16 just before i got my 2012 2LT/RS AGM. She is covered to drive all my cars. She is the primary driver on the 02 grand am i also have a 05 colorado. the insurance on my Camaro is only $70 a month. My insurance only went up a total of of $88 a month when we added her and the Camaro. We have had the same policy for 20+ years. So depending on your parents policy it might not be to bad. Just don't have you listed as the primary driver on the Camaro.

So what I might do now that I heard this, because of course I'm paying for gas and insurance and half the car, I'm going to have my dad buy the car and put it under his insurance as if it was his car, but I need to drive it DD as a student and job so I will be in it alone every day that's fine right?

I can tell you my 19 year old Niece just got a 2011 Malibu and is paying >$4000 a year and she has a grip of discounts from me (yeah she is on my policy as her mother doesn't drive)
without those discounts it was over $7000 a year with a $1500 deductible. now it is above state minimum requirements because I have to protect myself, our coverage is $250K/$500K/$100K with $250 deductible on theft/comprehensive and $500 on collision, Rental car, uninsured motorist, etc. She is excluded from driving my Camaro, she can only drive the Malibu or my wife's Camry. compare that to the $67/month my Camaro costs for me and the $54 the Camry costs for the wife for the same coverage. I'm going to say you are looking @ $5000 + here in Socal EASY.. and you will be and assigned risk driver until you are 21 especially in a Camaro. back in 1986 when I got my Trans Am @ 17 (1978 Trans Am, so 8 years old) I was paying over $3000 a year assigned risk on that car. |

not quite, here in CA, under 18 is a provisional driver, he cannot drive after dark or on freeways until he is over 18 unless he has a licensed passenger over 25 in the car as well. Nor can he transport any passengers under age 20 @ any time (again without a license driver over 25 also in the vehicle). http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d06/vc12814_6.htm CO has a lot better/lower rates that California, he is gonna get bent over in this state. |

That is definitely something to remember. I moved from FL to Houston, TX and my rates doubled almost to the penny with the same coverage and with the same insurance company. I asked the agent why and he said SoCal, NY,NY and Houston, TX all vary year to year for the most expensive insurance year to year. The actuaries look at the number of wrecks, stolen cars, etc. plus other statistics. SoCal is definitely in the top 3 for highest insurance rates no matter what your statistics are.
