Nitrogen isn't free?
Called my local Chevy dealer this morning and they want 30 dollars to refill my tires! Is this crazy?

considering about 70% of the air your breathing is nitrogen, yes, I'd say it's crazy and a waste of money. personally, I can live with putting a pound or five of air in my tires every 12-18 months, if that. I take my car to get the oil changed (not a DIY'er) and they check the tires anyways.

Use regular air, it's perfectly fine.

Well not really it stabilizes the pressure changes which makes for a better ride as your pressures fluctuate less.

Oh boy, here we go again. Nitrogen does NOT improve the ride of a car in any way. It doesn't matter what tire/wheel size your using. Using pure nitrogen does do two things. One it will reduce the oxidation/breakdown of the inside of your tires by not have oxygen in the tires (really very little oxygen...no one mounts tires in a vacuum). Given the technology in tires today, this really isn't too much of an issue (changes in vulcanized rubber technology, etc). Also, if you think back to your high school chemistry classes, you may remember that nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules. This means a tire filled with pure nitrogen will loss pressure much more slowly than a tire filled with normal air. Another thing to remember, as stated in a previous post, the air we breathe is mostly nitrogen (about 78%). Hope this helps. |

One of the best things I ever bought was an air compressor. My tire pressure on all 3 of my vehicles are always at the correct psi. Regular Air

Outside of racing applications, its not a need in a daily driver IMO.

So if I understand you correctly, you would like your dealer to give you free maintenance? I'm not being a smart-ass, I'm asking a serious question. Do you really expect to get free nitrogen top-offs from your dealer when selling it is part of what they make money on? It really doesn't cost the dealer much at all but that isn't the point. The point is if you see the value of nitrogen you will pay to get it. If you don't see any value then tell them to put air in it, as there should be no charge for that. After all oil doesn't cost the dealer much either, but if you expect to get free oil from the dealer.... well, you get it, right?

Nitrogen systems aren't free, especially those that are plumbed throughout the repair shop vs. a small roll around. It cost $10,000 to put it in our 5 bay shop, so you should expect to be charged for it. A lot of shops are offering free top-offs for a year or two with the purchase.
