VIA Motortrend "A Camaro SS ran the Nürburgring in 8:20. A quick scan of an authoritative listing (it definitely looks authoritative, anyway) of Nürburgring lap times at supercars.net shows cars posting a lap time of 8:20 include the E36-generation BMW M3 in 1999, the Porsche 911 GT3 (993 generation) in the same year driven by 'Ring ace Walter Roehrl and stuff like the Audi RS6 in 2001. For a little extra perspective on that 8:20 lap time, GM recently boasted the coming '09 Corvette ZR1 did it in 7:26.4."

oky, I just did a research and indeed Camaro SS got 8:20. I am very implessed and it changed my mind. haha Camaro SS is fast in straight line and CAN handle. ![]() Hey, if you give me an argument with a valid data, then I am not afraid to admit my mistake and rectify. As a Nissan 370z owner, I woudn't want to be next to Camaro SS in the stop light. HAHHAHA |

If I drive tractors and 18wheelers all day, I could get into a Dodge Challenger and think it was a good handling car. If your coming from a 370z, your going to think the Camaro handles like a boat regardless of how fast it did the Nurburgring. They are really very very different cars, and I spent a long time comparing the two. Let me save you some time and give you the punch line. The Z is the sports car and the Camaro is the grand touring car. The end. Everything else is fluff. The Camaro has more power, but really isnt all that much faster because of the weight. The Camaro is more comfortable, and has more seats. The Z makes up what it looses in practicality in performance. |

why is a 370Z being compared to an SS comaro in a WRX thread? As i've already said. the 09 WRX is great and will keep up i believe with the FE2 tuned suspension of the V6.... against the SS the camaro will just pull too hard in the straights. now for the 370... its not a damn sports car.. its a sporty coupe... and no shit the Camaro is a Grand tourer.... its a 2+2 RWD FE which is kinda the definition of a GT car..... again.. I've always thought of Z's,Supra's, Skylines, and the like as tuner sportscars, though I consider the Scooby and the EVO not as sports cars but Rally inspired cars. The Camaro/Mustang/Charger/Challenger types as muscle (pony) cars.
Never quite understood the concept of the "grand touring" type vehicle being attributed to cars like the Camaro. Yes the Camaro is larger and heavier...but I don't think it was designed as a luxury high speed long distance runner. The term GT is sort of misnomer with a lot of the cars that the label is tacked on to. A Viper for example...isn't a true GT vehicle but it sometimes called as such. I think it was designed to be an American muscle car with little regard to cargo-space or long distance. Original grand turismo type cars were farther up in the luxury ladder--and HP for that matter.

Grand Touring is more attributed to the type of races they were entered in. DB's, Massa, Ferrari 612's are all GT cars because it more the endurance long distance road racing that they do... Same goes for the Camaro.

From someone who used to own a modded 04 wrx with 300whp and suspension mods, The SS will win at the drag strip and also on a fairly large road course like Road Atlanta or VIR. Unless you have the stiffest coilovers and some pretty big sway bars, the wrx understeers big time going into corners. Also, the wrx's brakes suck. The STI's have brembos but I know the 09 wrxs dont and come with just 4 piston fronts and 2 piston rear calipers.
With my WRX i had COBB springs KYB struts and cusco swaybars and even though the WRX felt more nimble, no doubt the SS will take it on a larger road course around the corners. The straight aways will not be a match for a wrx. I hope this helps from someone who drove a modded wrx for 5 1/2 years. Also, something to note the wrx has some terrible turbo lag and dont make anywhere near their peak HP curve till around 5600 RPM and the same goes for torque. The SS will pull harder down in the lower RPMs when compared to the WRX. The interior is much better on the SS primarilly because when I turn my system up loud I dont hear any rattles. Those might have came with the loud exhaust over time but still, the interior is a POS. The only thing I really liked about my car is the performance on the track, street, mud and snow. Plus the GF likes the SS 200x more than the wrx! |

Interesting comparison, not sure how relevant it is though since we are comparing the Camaro to the 09 WRX and not the 04. |
