For their part, Ford sold about 1,000 fewer Mustangs (7,632 vs. 6,686) month-to-month. Drawn out on a long enough graph, and Ford will eventually sell more Mustangs. That's if reading trends wasn't just like reading tea leaves. As far as why the Camaro continues to outsell the Mustang, we'll chalk that up to the Chevy's newness. Once the General fulfills all of its backlogged orders, we're thinking the Mustang is just too tough an opponent to continually beat. Even if they keep covering the Chevy in Gobots Transfromers bunting. Either way, we'll see you back here next month.

They either forgot to mention or didn't do their homework since there was a whole week in july they didn't even make any camaros!

Hmmmm, that does raise some questions that prevent it from being a dull fluff article.

* How does the 10,000 backlog compare to last month's backlog?
* Since you're comparing, what was Mustang backlog?
* A 300-HP (minimum) car qualifies for Cash for Clunkers? A program designed to urge people to buy more fuel efficient vehicles? A 300-HP MINIMUM vehicle qualifies? How is that not the COOLEST NEWS EVER!?!?!?

Is it just me, or does anyone else think the Camaro will actually sell relatively more cars next year? They have a convertable coming, plus all the folks who are leary about buying a car in the first year of production.

I think they will continue to sell more next yr, as more people see them and "fall in love" with them, and want one of their own...

Ford will just dump tons of mustangs on the dealers with incentives just to outsell the Camaro! They do it every year with the f-150 and GM still outsells them with Silverado and Sierra.

Cash for Clunkers shouldn't be taken into consideration really. In order to qualify for it you would have needed to plan ahead enough months ago when ordering to manage to take delivery in the short time the program was going on (you know, before the money dried up). That's a lot of forethought (and luck). Either that or you needed to be lucky enough to snag a car off the lot which I would think would be a small percentage of sales.

The only way Cash for Clunkers could have been a factor would be if there were tons of Camaros sitting on lots all over the place. That being said it's that much more amazing that Camaros outsold Mustangs and Challengers which are sitting on lots all over the place (comparatively speaking) and therefore an easier snag with the program.
