It's amazing some of the short cuts and/or half ass work people will do. With this one, you will know exactly what's been done to it and how well it was done.

Restoring a car is no joke, time and money. It is amazing how much things cost, if you want to have it done right. This car had the base V8, 327 2 barrel with 210 HP, nothing exciting. That car wears me out looking at it. I would never attempt to put something back together, that someone else took apart. We'll you have other cars to drive, cause that car ain't going on the road for a while, without a lot of time and money. Just my $.02, best of luck with your decision.

Here is an example, you want to put in a hot motor. The rear end in that car is a 10 bolt, single trac, mono leaf spring. You will want a 12 bolt, posi-traction, multi leaf springs. Just takes more money!

Thanks for the input. I understand that there is a lot of work in restoring a car and that it will take a lot of time and money. I have other cars to drive. I'm just trying to verify that this car holds about the same value as my current car does now.

To your other point I probably would swap out that 10 bolt rear for a 12 in due time but that would be something to worry about after the car was able to be driven and put away for the winter.

If I got into this project I wouldnt think of putting this motor and transmission into the car without rebuilding it first.

When you get someone elses project thats in boxes expect to pay double to triple whatever you think it will cost to restore. Invariably all the missing and trashed pieces in boxes will cost you a small fortune to replace or source. A disassembled car is not a good first restoration project unless you have a fair amount of mechanical and body skill and a couple years to dedicate to it.

This. One thousand times, this.

You have mentioned doing this car yourself. You also have mentioned rebuilding the drive train and eventually going to the 12 bolt rear. There is no way you are spending less than 35k on the restoration. Your car is worth more than this mess. It runs and drives.

Still up in the air. The guy still has it. I have just been trying to price what some of these cars sell for out in "similar" condition.

OK take the value of your car and the 20k plus and value against a car already done. Here's a Camaro at Smoky Mountain Traders for 27,900 and you might be able to get it down some. You drive it away and someone else had the headaches of restoring. just a thoughtName: smoky.jpg

do you have the time and money to put it back together. My thought is about $30k if you have to pay somebody else to do mechanical, electrical, interior and paint. Also how supportive is the wife? How much time will she allow you to work on it. Kids education $, Kids helping restore as family project?

Lots to think about.

That is a really nice car. However, buying one that is done takes away from the "fun" in doing it. At the end of the day I would rather say that I built the car opposed to buying it.

I could come up with the time/money to put the car back together and the wife doesnt seem to care what I do with working on cars at this point. I have put in some time just doing minor modifications to the Mustang(gears, exhaust, suspension, etc) and she hasn't said a word.

While I would like the kids to help me with the car I doubt that it would happen. My 6 year old step son isnt really into cars, my 4 year old daughter my do some right now but in a year or 2 that can change, and my youngest just turned 1 so he would be more in the way at this point.
