I checked the 2014 NHRA rule book, and it's basically the same as I posted above, except that they have incorporated the 2008 and newer exception amendment into the verbiage on Page XIV.
But, they still have chosen not to include a written definition of "unaltered". |

For those needing clarification, if there are any, here is some information on how the rule book is set up.
From "How to Use this Rule Book" Another key to understanding the NHRA Rulebook is that certain classes “build” from another. When the Rulebook states “Requirements and Specifications for … are the same as those for ...” you must read the referenced section first. For example, before reading Section 4B, Advanced E.T., one must first understand Section 4A, Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman. Before reading the Super Gas section, one must first read the Super Street section. If a particular requirement is mentioned in the Super Street section and not in the Super Gas section, then the requirement is the same in both categories. If after reading the Rulebook you still have questions, consult page xiv for hours and phone numbers where tech personnel may be reached. These phone lines are extremely busy, so prepare your questions in advance. Remember, it is your responsibility to follow the standards in this Rulebook that pertain to your vehicle. Keeping this in mind and based on the Table of Contents previously posted, an individual that is required to comply with all of the Summit Racing Series requirements would have to first determine a particular class to be in then all rules for the class and any in the previous related class and General Regulations would be required. For example, most will fall into section 4 sub section 4A. They would then have to meet the requirements of Sections 1, 2, and 3 and any referred to sections, which is usually section 10, General Regulations. I can see where the confusion in the use of Unaltered is coming from. If the word itself were to actually be defined then legally it would have to apply to it as it is used in all the other locations such as fire wall, floors etc. Then there would be the risk of false definition. Clearly what needs to be done is have the word Unaltered stricken out of the NHRA Drags: Street Legal Style Presented by AAA section of the Rule Book Introduction and replaced with something in clear defining text of what is really meant. Currently, based on this thread, it is clearly ambiguous and at risk of subjective interpretation for that particular section. Keep in mind though, that this is for typical non-points type events like CFest or a grudge night venue. Depending upon the hosting track mgt and the venue coordinators and the tech inspector as to how much enforcement is unpredictable at this time. There are other unmanageable variables from track to track in enforcement such as prior events causing litigation and personalities that are to be considered unknowns creating more noise in rules requirements information. If there were any advice to be offered to anyone with modifications looking to run their car at any track at anytime, one time rental to all out points competition, I would say get a copy of the rule books and prepare the car in a responsible way that it meets or exceeds the requirements of the intended class.

Ok, well this is confusing me, but it could be just that I'm overthinking this. I'm going to be building a street car that could be taken to the track. I'm going to be putting in it RPM's 5-point chrome-moly roll cage from Phastek Performance. I'm going to be running ~7.4 secs in the 1/4th mile. Am I going to be fine on an NHRA track with that cage or will I need a different one? Srry to threadjack also but it is what it is.

I asked this question to the track I run at, MidMichigan Motorplex in Michigan, and they told me I did not need a roll bar as long as I did not run quicker than a 9.99 and did not alter (cut away) any of the stock mounting areas of the stock body mounts, front suspension, rear suspension or body itself! They are a NHRA track and I have seen "stock" cars (2008 and newer)of all makes running well into the low 11's and high 10's with no roll cage.

It sounds like the solution for the super fast guys is to run 1/8th mile or 1K feet and shut it down before the traps. If the rules don't explicitly state an 1/8th mile requirement they can't kick you out for it.
Use a track rental in the fall to go for new bests. To the poster wanting to run 7.4 in the quarter you need a fully certified cage setup and a BUNCH of other safety equipment. (Unless you mean 7.4 in the 1/8th) Cheers Chris |

-Engine, LSX 454 from TSP - 6l80E tranny ,custom built, from PATC -Whipple W175FF from Phastek -New exhaust -New suspension -Meth/water injection system from Snow Performance -Tranny fluid cooler from Mishimoto -Oil cooler from Mishimoto -Pair of baffled oil catch cans from Mishimoto, one on foul side of PCV system, one on fresh side of PCV system End result will be probably the meanest 5th gen in the West, with over 2000 horses, and it's all gonna be street legal. However, that number is just theory so far and would be fact with a better driver than me. Truth be told, the car could do it but the driver probably couldnt'.
