Use the anology to the bicycle , if you are pedaling on a flate road going on easy on yourself , and for any reason you want to get going fast quick , you down shift and get on it
Or if you start going on a steep road , you downshift and get going If you don't get it yet , you are just goofing around with everyone's time in here ! |

At this point.. just drive it. Try it... slower roads and such to learn what it feels like.

A nice, simple practice exercise is this....
Get going on the highway, cruising at about 65 mph on flat, level, dry road, with no other cars around you. Pretend you need to pass someone quickly... step on the gas. Notice the transmission downshifts? .. It will usually take a second or two to kick in. Now, do it again, but right as you gas it, press your left paddle once. Notice how much faster it downshifted? You manually downshifted to fifth gear. Do it again, but press the left button twice (quickly) right when you gas it. Now you really took off, huh? That's because you downshifted to fourth gear. Don't forget to upshift after you reach your desired speed. Play with it. It's very easy to learn and the car will pretty much keep you from doing anything too dangerous. Only practice when it's dry outside. You can also practice downshifting as you come to a stop, to experience engine braking. Simply click the left paddle as you brake.

When I have used the paddles and downshifted at too high an rpm the car jolts. Unfortunately, the automatic in the Camaro doesn't have a rev match feature like high end cars. Maybe the 6th gen will.

don't worry about downshifting when you are coming to a stoplight... the car will downshift for you because you cannot revmatch.

The auto does rev match when you downshift, but if you do it at a high speed for the lower gear, you will certainly feel deceleration when the lower gear engages.
Downshifting is useful at the track, where you are using both the engine and the brakes to slow the car down. But in everyday driving on the street, why not just use the brakes and save wear and tear on the tranny? |
