Small Block
I have heard the L99 referred to as a small block engine. What defines an engine as small block vs. big block? Is it cubic inches, or the physical size of the block? What is the advantage of one over the other?
Thanks in advance for helping out a rookie.

It's the bore spacing and other dimensions. 4.40 inches between bore centers for the small block and 4.84" for the big block. The big block also has a taller deck for longer stroke.
Small block is smaller and lighter. Big block allows for a larger cylinder bore which means more displacement.

I assume you know that there was a SBC and a BBC. Back then it was easy to differentiate one was bigger than the other.
The LS series shares some dimensions with the original SBC so that is why they sometimes get called a SBC. In reality it's just a Chevy (GM) V8... Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

Biggest small block I've heard of is a 472c.i. They're really pushing the limits of what the material that engines are built out of today.

I had a 348 back in the day. It was stuffed in a '57 Chey. I loved that thing till I blew a piston.
Funny how cars bring back memories.

Wasn't the 348 a tall deck or something? I remember there being something odd about it.

IIRC Caddy had a 472 and a 502. Those were different though. Chevy has a 502 but it is a GMPP part.
