Hi New to the group and joined because of the COPO spoiler discussion, I know the spoiler options for the 70-73 2nd gen was a 1 or a 3 piece option. I have searched the COPO spoiler and I am not clear what makes this different for a 3 piece spoiler? I it simply the manufacturer? or am i missing something?

I am looking at a 72 RS and it has this spoiler (pic) below the current owner is saying that was the available option??

Any help would be appreciated.

The original spoiler for 1970-1/2 Camaros was the one piece, short height design. This spoiler was standard if you ordered a Camaro that was equipped with a spoiler. This short spoiler was found to actually be creating UP force at high speed which was bad for the SCCA Trans-Am series racers. The solution was to try using the center section from the Pontiac Trans Am spoiler along with special Camaro specific end caps. This new second design when combined with the front spoiler would generate the desired downforce at racing speeds so GM started sending them out for use in the SCCA racing cars. The competitors cried foul as these were not the "production line" spoilers and should not be eligible for Camaros to run them as they were not available in the showroom so GM made them available to Camaro buyers as a "Central Office Production Order" (COPO) special order option. Not to be confused with Regular Production Options (RPO). Bottom line - The 3-piece spoiler was better on the race cars so they no longer needed the short height 1-piece spoiler. The 3-piece became a standard (RPO) spoiler for spoiler equipped Camaros beginning in 1971 and the short height spoiler was gone after 1970-1/2. The build sheet would help confirm which spoiler your car was actually built with. The 1970-1/2 COPO spoiler IS essentially the same 3-piece spoiler also used as an RPO 1971-1981.
