Tire Review: BFGoodrich g-Force COMP-2 A/S
This past Sunday I got around to mounting my brand new MRR 228s with BFGoodrich G-Force COMP-2 A/S all-season rubber to my 1LE. The following is my impressions of the tires. Note that they are OEM sized, on OEM-sized rims with OEM offsets. No suspension/alignment changes were made at this time.
For the record, I typically despise all-season tires. They are good at nothing. For all of the vehicles in my family, I keep two sets of wheels/tires, 1 set with summers, and another with true winter rubber. I opted for all-seasons here because I won't be driving this car in standing snow, I simply wanted a tire that would retain its pliability and grip in freezing temps. https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...m=835WR0GFC2AS ![]() The Good: The day I mounted them it was in the high 40s here for temperature. Due to a story far too long to go into in this post, it took all day to mount these wheels and clean up the old ones, so I didn't get a chance to drive the car until the next morning on my way to work. It was 29 degrees out when I left the next morning, and the tires met my #1 goal ... cold traction improvement. As expected, these acted like any other all-season tire, providing excellent levels of cold-weather grip. They would be an excellent touring tire. The sidewall, despite being a 35-series tire, is quite compliant. The car feels more comfortable than it ever has before with regards to road imperfections. Tire noise is also significantly reduced over the OEM G2s. Unfortunately, the benefits stop there. The Bad: On-center feel is gone. I've never experienced a more dramatic change in on-center feel as I have going between the G2s and Comp-2s. In fact, there is less feedback in general. The steering feels lighter in all situations, which makes sense given that the rubber isn't as sticky and there's less of it in contact with the pavement. At the limits of adhesion, where the G2s were very communicative, the Comp-2s feel like jello and have you wondering what the car will be doing next. At the 35PSI cold I'm running right now, I can feel the tire flexing under lateral loads. A lot. It feels like someone pulled out most of the compression and rebound dampening out of the shocks with the way the car porpoises and wiggles. There's one particular decreasing-radius 270-degree turn that I get to take on the way to work every morning. I've seen 1.12 lateral Gs out of the HUD on G2s in this corner, and saw .93 Gs on the new Comp-2s with the tires howling like wild dogs. The G2s at the limit inspire confidence, the Comp-2s at the limit, with all of their lateral movement, inspire your ass to leak. So with that in mind, it's possible there's more grip in there and I wussed out too much to go find it. I will pump these things up to 38 PSI next time I stop for gas, and start playing with pressures to find the sweet spot. Overall: Overall, I have to remember that I was on a GREAT tire from the factory. It's tough comparing any all-season to something as aggressive and delicious as the G2s. I got my Comp-2s for under $175/each which is just about the least expensive tire available in our sizes. In that aspect alone, it was a good buy. For those of you that aren't into pushing the lateral limits of adhesion and would prefer a more comfortable ride along with increased tire life ... this might be a good choice for you. The price is definitely hard to beat. Let me know if anyone has any questions. Last edited by Billy10mm; 10-23-2015 at 11:41 AM. |

You have perfectly summed up how I felt for my over expensive Michelin PSS last winter. I'd much rather pay $175 for sub par performance then the $340'ish for the MPSS, read POS.
I know most of you out there love those tires but I for one do NOT. Thanks for the review. I've been wondering about these for a while. Might have to pick up a set. Unfortunately, I have two brand new AS3 s sitting in my garage which I'll need to burn up before going with the BFGs. In my youth I've always liked BFG tires so I'm not really surprised to hear they're not too bad. But what gear-heads around the world would really like to know is.... Do they leave those really nice deep black burnout marks on the road? Hmmmm....

I doubt he'll be doing many really nice deep black burnouts in his all season winter tires....could be wrong...
Nice review, OP, can I ask what all you've tried for an all season or winter tire on these cars? I'm looking for a set now and I'm between the BFG's, MPSS, AS3's, and a Continental. Thanks! |

Ugh, not the review I was hoping for, but maybe they will extend my fall driving and perhaps as the temps go up next summer they will be fairly sticky still for most of us spirited drivers

I just bought these tires and was waiting until I returned to do a review... Living in Oklahoma, it can be 60 degrees in the morning and freezing rain and snowing by 2 in the afternoon, I drive my car daily and love my 1LE but also need a reliable car 365 days a year... ( I do have an F250 if it snows)
I am by no means pushing my 1LE to the limit, I bought it for the looks, sound, and just plain badness and I have always run Ultra High performance A/S tires on my last 2 cars, I do prefer Conti DWS but they only have 175/35/20..I really like how these tires make the car feel.. it is perfect for cold weather and rain, it made the drive in rain very much more enjoyable from not being worried about hydroplaning off the road. They are not as sticky as the G2's, no more rocks being thrown down the side of my car, the OP hit the nail on the rest. at 175 bucks these have been outstanding so far, all 4 mounted, road force balanced, alignment and tire replacement for under 1000 dollars... I took measurements and pictures before and after that I will attach after I return home..

Not the result I was hoping for either. But I have to keep reminding myself that they are an all-season, and I'm coming from what is arguably the best street tire made. The price however, makes these very very attractive, even with their handling short-comings.

Great review, and it makes me very glad I live in an area where save a few days out of the year, the G2's can be used. Billy, based on your experience, what percentage of the capabilities of the 1LE are in the tire vs suspension?

Are you looking for a tire to run all year round, or just something to stick on in the colder months? If looking for a year-round all-season to improve your wear, I'd look elsewhere (not at the MPSS, nor the BFG). The MPSS is ALMOST as bad in the cold as the G2s, and the BFG doesn't provide enough feedback (for me) in spirited driving to be an all-year tire. Sorry I can't be of more help, but it's tough to find a good tire for a car like this. The wider the tire gets, the more important the weight of the vehicle and the stiffness/construction of the tire becomes with regards to feedback and handling. |

The 1LE's neutral balance, well-controlled body motions (especially in transitions, where the 1LE really shines), flat body attitude, and ability to put power down all come from the well-matched spring-to-damper rates and stiff body structure. And the phenomenal levels of stick come from a good factory alignment with matched-rubber that allows the car to use most of the generous tire patch we have. |

The irony is, I think G:2s are at their best when it's cold (40-50 degrees F or so), but it would take forever to warm them up at the street, and you'd probably have finished your commute by then.
Indeed, PSS overheats in a hurry on this car; it was the worst tire I tried on this car at the track. I currently have Hankook RS-3s on my street wheels, and I'll just stick with them in winter. Winter is pretty mild in here, so they should be good enough, and I usually pick the electric car for commute anyway

I loved my G:2 but thread wear suck and weather is harsh here; cold and rainy. Its hot 2.5 months/year. My PSS A/S 3 are not on the same level and way softer, like those Goodrich I guess, but they are way better for a DD. But man those G:2 stick like hell when its hot!!
Next tires will be regular PSS or those cheap Goodrich.. Thanks for the feedback OP

Yeah, I am fortunate to live in a warm climate all year round so I just stuck with the OEM tires again after 14k miles. I was looking at the Michelin PSS but they wanted $365 a tire and the G2s were $229. That's like $500 more for the set and even though they should last longer I was concerned about spending more for a tire and losing any of the handling we love about these cars. Bottom line from all the reviews is that OEM tire is the best performing tire if you can live with it.

I got a set of the BFG's about a month ago and I like the way the tire handles everyday driving. There is less grip when pushed hard but I don't plan on using these other than driving in the cooler temperatures. I will be switching back to the G2's in late Spring.
