418 build professional advice needed
Hey guys and gals long time lurker here
I'm wanting to build a 418 out of my stock block. Are there any reputable vendors on here to but the actual stroker kit from? Those of you who have stroker motors what lifters have you used? How big of cam do I need to put in it? Should I be shopping for 2" primary headers? Are gmpp cnc heads suitable for this application? What's kind of clutch should I be looking for? I'm on somewhat of a budget. Looking for the best deals possible. I don't mean to sound like a newb but I'm just trying to get a feel for what I'm getting myself into. Thanks in advance. |

1. Are there any reputable vendors on here to buy the actual stroker kit from? Yes, I bought mine from Texas Speed. They had a good deal on it. 2. Those of you who have stroker motors what lifters have you used? Lifters will depend on your goals for the car. I put a streetable cam in mine and just went with ls7/ls3 lifters. If you went with a huge cam or with a low lash solid roller, obviously your needs for lifters would change. 3. How big of cam do I need to put in it? Depends on what you want...Drag, Road Race, Daily Driver...Look for some mild LS7 cams to get idea or just call a vendor like Brian Tooley or Kip from Cam Motion. 4. Should I be shopping for 2" primary headers? Sure...1-7/8" or 2"...either will work and get nearly as much power as the other. 5. Are gmpp cnc heads suitable for this application? Suitable...depends...You'll have to change the valve springs at a minimum. If you're going to get the heads milled, you might have different needs than the stock chamber size on the GMPP heads. 6. What's kind of clutch should I be looking for? Depends on what you're doing in addition to the stroker kit. Nitrous? Turbo? Supercharger? Either way you can't beat a nice twin disc clutch like the monster LT1 series or a mantic 9000. 7. I'm on somewhat of a budget. Looking for the best deals possible. Don't be on a budget. DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. That means ARP head studs, main studs, and ARP 2000 rod bolts. Gap the rings for what your future intentions for the engine are. Get the correct pistons and rotating assembly for what your future plans are. Its cheaper to do it CORRECTLY once than it is to do it incorrectly once and upgrade later...plus that's a pain.

Your doing something we do several times a day. Give us a call @ Texas Speed & we can disucss your build. We've made over 675 flywheel hp with a stock LS3 intake, PRC CNC ported stock heads *way less $ than gmpp* and a TSP rotating assembly setup. We have all the components to do that build or can even cnc machine your block for you!

Here's a block being cnc digitized @ TSP. No other LS shop in the country offers this: |

Thanks for the replies guys!
I should have been more specific. It's gonna be a weekend car. I had the tsp 235/239 cam before. A lifter decided to come apart and trash my motor. Hence the reason for a new rotating assembly. Was not wanting to do ls7 lifters because they failed me before. I was recommended tie bar lifters. Being on a budget didn't mean I was going to cheap out on things. Im only gonna have the money to do this once. I'm not scared to sirens money I'm just into over paying for things. Someone always has it for a better deal. Jason I think we've spoke in the past. I might be giving you a call after I get out of work. I'm just trying to get my ducks in a row before I go spending 6k+ |

I was in the same situation as you. Some claim they spin motors upwards of 7000 rpm with LS7 lifters and stock rockers but I had way to many failures to use those components with my stroker build. I went with Morel solid tie bar lifters with a .903 dia, for added stability, also am going with a LLSR and most likely T&D roller rockers. Not a cheap set up but compared to the cost of the previous failures it's a drop in the bucket.

The morel lifters are nice for sure. We have roughly 50 sets of morel lifters in stock. They're really popular and super nice! Solid rollers aren't for everyone, but if you want to spend $1500 more than a hydraulic setup you can make a few more hp that's for sure!
